hip hop vocals

hi - hoping someone on here might be able to help.

Ive got someone to record some vocals for a hip hop beat i made and need some advice to help make it sound as good as possible when i synch it with my beat.

Ive read on a couple of other forums people say to add some delay effects to the vocals - would people recommend this? is there anything else i can do to improve the vocals as im sure the recording will be very average.

Like you said about the delay, this might work, it all depends on the track. Use whatever makes the vocals fit best to the track. Reverb aswel if its needed.,and compression

best thing to do is first off get them to spit to the beat so the tempo is right, then get them to record the first 16 three times and make sure it is similar on all 3 tracks and when i say similar i basically mean the exact same, then start panning 2 of the vocals left and right and keep the third centered this will make them track fuller. Next you want to add reverb, i cant say which type of reverb to use but the best thing to do is to play around and get a feel for what sounds good ect... you will also need to monitor the levels of the 3 recordings so that they are all averagely the same (repeat for the other verses also)

Chorus's need to be done pretty much the same and remember to do two sets of adlib's for everything also and pan/ reverb them

Pretty basic but effective

find orig bpms for hip hop tune and match/stretch to beat using something like paulstretch etc
simple dj technique with acapellas just in production

woooo.

b careful if you're eqing vocals, if it is necessary only take very little cuts, or you will find the human element is lost quickly.

Most important thing is a good recording, good recording and you don't have to do much at all.

most of the time I get bad recordings, have to use gates and even cut and move sections about.

find reverb is helpfull, only a little, to meld to the mix but best advise is to mix around the vocals.

the easiest, best, and probably cheapest solution:

get your rapper to know the rhymes inside and out so that he/she can totally nail them. not everyone's jay-z.

then, find a good, cheap studio and spend the $30-50 to record them on a good mic, with a good front-end chain (nice pre, maybe some eq/comp/limiting) controlled with a good engineer.

done.

adlibs.. after you listen to terekete, get the person to adlib over their vocal like real rappers. its amazing how much it adds.

by this i mean playback the beat and original vocal track and have the dude record a new track with him saying the last words of each line and other sounds that relate to what hes rhyming about.. if you listen to most hiphop they all do it and it definitely helps with the hype

yeah will def be asking him to record some adlibs

thanks again to everyone who left advice in here - not sure how good the recording quality will be, that depends on him, but hopefully will be able to make the best of it
