I come in here for a laugh and I occasionally check the events forum to see which wobble merchant will be making an appearance in Manchester next :D

Listening very selectively really helps. I only listen to the output of a few labels whose releases I really appreciate and some weekly/monthly radio-shows to know what's going on for the rest. The rest of my listening-time is happily spent on other music.

I am sure I quite miss some good stuff by being so restrictive, but on the other hand it got me enthusiastic again about the really good stuff (Darkstar! Darkstar!).

Been downloading lots of radio sets and studio mixes. Some i listen to once and delete some i thrash for a month or so until a better one comes along. Maybe it's because i dont bother with traklistings that i cant trainspot artists or tunes. But what i'd prefer is more artist only albums like scuba or cyrus or burial or boxcutter. Would love to hear a darqwan only album or a toasty only album. Artists who do have their own distinct sound which they have evolved over time so you can hear the progression and look forward to where they will take their sound next. More compilations like 'built for boundaries' and 'space and time' would be good too . Showcases of the diverse nature of dubstep not so much ones like caspa/rusko fabriclive although i realise that is more a sampler of what you'd get at their gig which is what i'd want at a club but not at home. Thats just my preference though.

I still buy a fair bit of dubstep, but other than the odd radio show I don't really listen to it that much (partly because I'm too lazy to keep on getting up and changing records every 5/6 mins).

I find i am listening to mostly grime, old hip-hop, some world and soul stuff.

And I come here mostly for a laugh and some interesting (v occasional) discussion with like minded people.

i partly agree with you... but just out of interest what sort of dubstep are you talking about here? there's such a wide variety of sounds that tarring all dubstep with the same brush is a bit silly
Well I suppose the plethora of midrange squawkers that sound pretty homogenous, the indistinguishable halfstep plodders with less sycopation than a marching band. Seems inevitable that so many copyists will arrive but just seems unimaginative to me, which is surely goes against the point of doing something creative in the first place.
it depends entirely on what you're after in music though. was talking to you on msn the other day and you kept saying things like this sounds like 80s techno or something that like. so to you it's unimaginative and but to younger listeners (which the vast majority of dubstep listeners are i would have thought) who didn't live through those times it sounds new and interesting. yeah it might be borrowing from old sounds, either deliberately or not, but it's doing something that a lot of people wouldn't have heard. perhaps people should look more into past music (that's of course if it's available anywhere other than filesharing - which often it's not) but it's human nature that people want some new and "interesting" and often just want to look cool to their mates. possibly this is why there's getting a lot of undesirable element at nights nowadays with people there to look cool etc

sorry went off on a bit of a tangent there
good point..shonky's ruining dubstep for me, make him stop

Come here for the jollies, I like to check 'other music' section too :D

I've never been into any clubbing music in general (you've sensed an old goth in me, haven't you, lol) This is like my 'reaching 30, got to try some new things in life', haha. Before dubstep I think last time I went to a rave was in 1997 or smth, so this is still all quite new for me. Although the hype is slightly going down.

speaking of remarc, found a remarc interview on youtube yesterday. i hadn't seen it before.
its not amazing, but quite funny in places, worth checking out if you like mr marc

as for dubstep, its still very much interesting me.
since i was a bit of a latecomer to the genre, there's still a big back catalogue of great dubstep that i'm not familiar with, and quite a few new releases and unsigned stuff that i like.

there's enough generic ''lets make a noisy tune'' dubstep out there, but i still find boring dubstep a lot more interesting and listenable than boring drum and bass or boring hip hop.

fair enough there's some shite 12"s around, but i can't wait to see what H.E.N.C.H, punch drunk, narco hz and DMZ's list of releases is going to look like in a few years

main forum i find all a bit doom and gloom and very repetitive, but if i look hard there is still stuff keeping me interested, but yeah i do find a lot more now when listening to new tunes on radio etc. that they don't really have that same impact on me, a lot of tunes i other find repulsive or i'm just a bit neutral on them...

I'd rather just skip the boring shit altogether to be honest.

I think it's just that there's only so many times you can hear the same idea played out with limited variation.
Hmm....

I generally come here for the SNH... I still check the other parts on occasion, but for the most part its all fo my ninjas!

As for dubstep... Im with Shiva. I still get really excited by a good drop and a new idea and dont mind wading through some wobblers to hear it. I guess part of it is that I dont listen to much dubstep when Im not spinning it or record shopping and a good amount of the tunes I spin are from homies. I like a little bit of it from all genres too and the tangents that dubstep has taken in conjunction with some other forms out here, like the stuff the Trouble and Bass crew is doing and the west coast variation on the formula. Kinda getting over the dark techy stuff, but not completely. If theres an over abundance of one style in particular out here its that, that 'slowed down dnb' shit.

I look at it like house more than anything. A good house dj has so many different vibes at their disposal and can really take the listener on a journey, and so can a dubstep dj who digs past that weeks big tunes.

That, and I really like that dubstep has forced some of the dnb heads in LA to remember that theres more music out there than jumpup and techstep.

I check the main forum probably once a week. Mainly to see who's on the MAH show.
Ive lost interest a little, i don't go out of my way to go to nights anymore. However i still check out my favourite producers and i hear new stuff through the Geiom & Spamchop show on Kemet lot's of good music is being made but not nearly as much as in say 2006.
Im kind of prepared for it though as it's always the case with new scenes. I saw what happened to Jungle and Garage so it's no big thing.
It hasn't got to the point where i don't bother anymore unlike Jungle which died a death in 2002 (imo)

I still love all sorts of dubstep (though i agree there's a lot more shit about than there should be) but with regards to the forum i pretty much only come here for the SNH and also a bit of shameless self promotion...lol
