EDIT: concerning to that it is not allowed as we said no synths! but i might be completely wrong as i have no clue about granular synthesis...
Well granular synthesis is not synthesis in the classical sense. It just takes a sample and splits it up in tiny pieces, so the audio becomes more "elastic". The Ableton Live timestretch funciton works like this, so timestretching the sample would be applying a basic "granular synthesis" to it.
I'd say its just "advanced sampling". NI Kontakt is also capable of doing granular processing.

Ehm, what about effects, like the ones which come with Ableton or Reason?

I would think its okay (mainly because one of my main riffs was used by adding an alien effect from Magix to one of the samples! lol)

It's not using a synth but applying a preset present to the audio by changing pitch... etc.

i think the real issue is no original audio sources. alter the shit out of what marty gave you, but dont make any new original sounds. i would hope running samples through synths to process is okay as long as you arent creating oscillators/patches and then playing it like an instrument..

effects are definitely cool to the game, digital or analog, outboard or software

I propose that Forensics is only allowed to enter if he produces with both hands tied and a hangover.

I'm pretty sure you aren't allowed to use VSTi's, just a heads up. 8)
I'm sure the rest of ya probably know this already, but just in case you didn't- VST's (Virtual Studio Technology) are the broader term you were probably looking for, for what it matters.

A VSTi is specifically a VST instrument, i.e. it generates sound in some way, while VST effects like reverb would not be considered a VSTi.

-or-

All VSTi's are VST's, but not all VST's are VSTi's.
