I mean, i'm a white guy and I can't really say much about black people, I mean I'll talk to a green person if they seemed interesting doesn't matter to me but like most big cities like London it IS a multi cultural city. I went to school with white, black, brown, blue, purple, pink people..I mean you get the picture.

A lot of the Black GUYS in my class, not girls were reallllllly half-assed about everything, they thought "Oh, I'm black, I'm never going to get anywhere, the government hates me, teachers hate me cause I am black and listen to rap, yada yada"

I mean for someone whos never tried in the 5 years ive knew them to say that is actually quite annoying, I mean I worked my ARSE off in school and I didn't get what I wanted out of it but at least I tried, now i'm in college doing what I wanna do.. But yet I still talk to some of the guys from school(White guys too!) and they're out of education, work and just smoke drugs and write bars all day. Surely this IS a problem I mean if someone who NEVER tries because they're already in a 'i'm going to be a failure' state of mind, no wonder people like Bashy are making tunes like this I bet he was just like the people I knew and realized if you wanna make something of yourself all you gotta do is TRY, its not even a message to 'black boys' I think its a message to anyone who will hear it but he can't say .. 'every boy, every boy' cause they're think "Whos this joker"..

Oh and about racism, I think half the time people don't care about race they just have these stereotypes in their head.

You know...
"Hes black, hes going to steal something"

"Hes white, bet he is a posh or a chav"

"Hes Jewish, hes rich"

"Hes Asian, he owns a curry house"

You get my 'theory' I mean I admit I have had spurts of racism when I was younger cause I used to get into beef with gangs of other races ALL the time but it wasn't actual hate I mean, if someone of another race bumped into me .. I'd think "Dirty -racial slur-" but I wouldn't mean it, it would just be my first thought cause of what these certain people of these race did that one time. Racism IS a big issue and not going to lie and say I haven't ever been racist but I mean I KINDA get what people mean....Not going to lie either I am a ginger!(and proud) and people hate on me cause of my hair colour? I mean it IS kinda pathetic when you think about it. I have learned as I have gotten older that it isn't 'these race of people' I dislike, its people who give their race a bad name, its just like making a twat of yourself with a group of people you don't know, they're going to think you're a twat cause of one thing you did...

Basically I guess what i'm tryna say is sometimes people need a book or a song or a TV show sometimes to make them believe in themselfs again cause it IS a cruel world on any street corner and some people just lose faith.

yeh that's another thing... this telling black boys they can make it as an MC... OR instead of spending period 4 maths class writing rhymes instead of paying attention and skipping school to be in grime videos you could pay attention and do your fucking homework so u can get a job with slightly more longevity than the lifespan of a flighty music genre.

I mean, why would you wanna be a grime MC anyways if you want loads of money?

I swear JME is still living at home....

If he was making so much "P"

wouldn't he go and buy a mansion in the country like American hiphop artists?

I bet he makes about as the same as most of us here... Just blags it a bit.

Nothing against the guy, what he does is alright I spose but I just think being a grime MC or even a producer in a genre where theres like 1 true success story that I know of (well, someone signed to a major) in the ... what 8-9 years the sound has been floating about?

hehehe awww. Now you're makin' me blush.

I understand about the whole shift in priorities. I agree that the community needs to focus on other goals such as adequate education or planning for advancement. That's something that needs to be addressed as well.

But stating one does not negate the existence of multiple problems. Race has become a very convoluted issue, with many layers that would need to be addressed openly and honestly to really get to the heart of the matter. And now that the general populace has started feeling a sort of backlash, as well as the interior criticism of several well-noted black figures, we need to be careful to not oversimplify things. As simple as it seems and would actually be to change, its like an anchor perpetually tugging at us throughout everything we do, whether or not its overtly stated or subtly implied.

Just in the case of whether or not black people should try to pursue stardom as opposed to any professional or academic accolades. As much as one would argue that lack of energy and focus towards more substantial pursuits is indicative of some inherent flaw, a different perspective could be that since this person only seems to see black people in positions of success where they surpass the stereotypes and treatment of their race (athletics, entertainment); that the only proven area for advancement would be that.

Depends on the perspective. True growth comes from being able to see all of them.

Doesn't really help on black people in high political or business positions to be so negative too. I mean even some of the black teachers at my school used to be reallllllllllllllly smug and ignorant cause they had a half respectable job and all people in the class wanted to be as a footballer or a rapper.
:?

I think its a subject what shouldn't be bought up unless in confinement such as a forum cause theres SO many things what have been done and happen in such the world way its toooo easy to be offensive these days.

All excellent points I've got to say, and as strange as it is, people have to realize that criminal lifestyles aren't a black ting, the "gangsta" culture is just a lower class ting. It's fucking stupid, I swear. My dad (Community Service at a middle school, alternative to suspension) has tons of kids that swear they don't have to do anything in school, because they will be famous rappers, or in the NFL, or NBA, etc. And it's not just black kids. Plenty of white kids.
Not that I'm saying that it's okay to hate the poor, it's just fucking stupid to think that all black people are criminals, or that all criminals are black. And no matter what, it's hard to overlook the fact that the most popular "gangstas" are black, and the fact that Africa is such a shithole continent. It's just unreasonable that the black race is sliding so far back into a culture of murder and tribalism.

deliberately not touching the assessment of africa...

I think thats a misinformed statement. In the US, great strides towards the middle class have been taken in the black community. Many black youth are going to college, certainly more than in years before. There are more black homeowners and more black people in positions of power. I think as time goes on, and more black people ascend into general middle class mediocrity, that perhaps more attention would be paid to class instead of race.

as for the murder and tribalism, i wouldn't say that was merely an african thing. murder and tribalism have been seen in every culture and ethnicity from the khmer rouge in southeast asia to war torn baltics to south american dictatorships and political coups in africa. the need to dominate by force isn't even an african condition by contemporary standards; as most of the world thinks the US handling of Iraq to be cruel and barbaric.

"I wanna be a footballer i wanna be a rapper fuck school" = this is because what youths (me) see on the telly, on the computer, advertisements, basically everywhere. Look at the programmes on telly that youths will watch "My sweet 16" "celebrity rap superstar" "pimp my ride" "Americas next top model" "x factor" "step up". Its mainly to do with WHO you are, and how much STATUS you have. There isnt a great role model, i was speaking to my nan and she said to me "my role mofel was the lady who lived next door to us, she always was gardening" Then i asked my little brother who's 13 and he said "i dunno really....dont have one, i like music and fast cars though" Now thats a BIG difference.

"Im black so its going to be harder" maybe when your parents where your age but not no more, its hard for EVERYONE. Kids that think that is because thats what has been DRILLED into their head from young 9 times outta 10.

Just found out my friend is doing a tour with Bashy....Its called the "Shut up tour".....

when will people stop talking about "race" which itself is scientafically wrong.
also stop pretending there's a black/brown/white/social class/sexually orientated united community, nowadays it's eveybody on it's own in the western world wher community doesn't mean that much anymore.
this kind of tracks just keep peeps in them respective mental prison. should i feel concerned as being "mixed race", should i feel guilty as looking whiter than black or should i kill myself coz i'm not part of a "race"....
+ as someone says emotive grime doesnt work 99% of the time

nah you should do you and not hate on anyone trying to do them. thats basically what anyone could ask for. send out positive vibes. be easy.

seriously, why are people having such a hard time of seeing the positive message in this? its kinda like criticizing a female pop star if she sings about having a self-esteem because she looked fat in her jeans last tuesday...

and i dun think you should hate yourself for not being part of a race, even though it just means you're part of both. i dunno...maybe i'm missing something but there don't seem to be a lot of positive uplifting depictions of black people in the media.... not a whole bunch of them everywhere doing regular awesome things....just a lot of cops and robbers and chicks who don't know their baby daddy....oh and condoleeza and colin. I don't get why the racial part gets so exclusionary when anyone who is an other has adapted and accepted this as part of existence. Not enough to be all "blah blah blah angry at everything" but more subtle like "having long red hair is beautiful. i will never have long red hair. i guess beauty just won't apply to me" kinda thing (just an example). it just becomes the dull hum you get used to until you forget you're hearing it. doesn't mean its not there. just means that you deal and brush a lot of shit off.

i guess thats what i don't get. if there are asians out there who wanna do rap/grime and has a message of big ups your community or do for yours, i'd stand behind it. if there was a group of white cats singing about not being snowed in by Bush's blue collar routine, hell, i'd be singing a chorus at their show. And if there were a new girl group out singing about self-respect and not throwin your chi-chis out there like they have no value, i'd be right there and on point (provided it was all dubstep related somehow) you know what I'm saying? and acknowledging that race has something to do with their experience doesn't diminish the positivity. just gives it a different flavor is all.

nowadays people seem to be afraid to talk about it. but with no open discourse, all that does is let poor thoughts reign and fester with no chance of healing. i wouldn't want everyone to take so many steps back just because its an uncomfortable topic to discuss with no quick solution :(

Also, to clarify my earlier remarks, the black tribalism + murder thing was mostly based on Africa, but also on the gangsta culture, because gangs are nothing more than tribes, when you think about it.

the guy's just trying to do something positive to inspire young black kids. Initially from the title i thought i'd hate it, i was like great, another stupid youtube video promoting racial tension amongst today's cyber youth. Then i actually watched and listened to it, aswell as some of the remixes, and fair play, it's not the best beat in the world, but some of the bars are deep and actually quite inspirational, not only for black people, but for humanity.

grime doesn't just have to be about 'creps', 'brown', and 'whips' u know

give it a chance I say. . .
we had a MASSIVE ongoing argument about this song at work..

I think my opinion is this:

Art should be whatever the fuck the person making it wants it to be.. but this song is being, amongst the yoots, heralded as some massive statement about the state of the youth, and most of his points apply accross the races, and that winds people up.

I mean it's one of those situations that if you flip it around you might end up winding people up enough to the point you won't even bother to begin with.

For example if someone wrote a reply about everyone but black kids, saying they also have issues, they would probably be branded a racist(wrongly)
