avg's alright - http://free.grisoft.com/
doesn't give you realtime protection but they update your defs for free and as long as you let it run every day it should keep on top of things
spybot s&d is good for specifically spyware - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

most antivirus programs just end up rinsing your ram worse than a virus anyway...
also - keep on top of your software updates - most virus hackers just go to e.g. the microsoft support webby, read the security update patches and target those cos peeps dont d/l them. Basically they get microsoft to do the work for them by exposing the flaws that they can target... i've always found that quite amusing actually...
This is what i've done and in the past 10 years (on the internet pretty permanently, 24-7) i've only had one virus of any real serious nature and that was me being stupid and hungover and opening an email attachment from someone i didnt know...
Either that or get a linux machine
mushy pEzee

yeah i was surprised by how easy the transition was from xp to linux (although i'm on ubuntu, which is linux for pussies), after getting stuck into red hat at work i thought it was going to be a fucking nightmaredr ddd wrote:Either that or get a linux machine
most of the things i want to use work fine through wine and the whole experience is easily 50% faster than xp was. the amount of free alternatives to literally every program ever written is fucking brilliant too
and there's like 4 viruses written for linux in the history of mankind

Best Anti Virus there IS, FACT.
If you're looking to spend money, get this it takes a while to configure it but I haven't had a virus in about... 2 years!
Plus, 40 quid a year for a safe PC, isn't THAT bad?
