Announcing a fresh night of music and dancing in Cornwall for 2008 and beyond!

Twenty years ago, Britain was undergoing the frenzy of musical youth culture that was Acid House.

At that time in Cornwall however, the popular scene seemed more centred on the traditional Pop and Rock roots of the South West.

Quality, underground electronic music of that era, such as House, Techno & Hip Hop, was restricted to a handful of now-legendary nights, held most noteably at The Bowgie (Crantock), Victor Drago’s (Falmouth) & The Shire Horse (St Ives). Just a few hundred people met up at these regular nights and helped today’s nightclubbing scene blossom.

Two DJ’s, who frequented all of those venues, are Grant Wilson-Claridge and Richard D. James. This duo have gone on to form the cult record label, Rephlex, who have released around 200 albums by more than 50 international artists in their 16 years of operations; described in 2001 by NME as “the coolest record label on Earth” and by Guardian Guide as “the best electronic music label in the country”.

Having established themselves as a home for unusual, leftfield and sincere music, Rephlex has chosen to transform it’s popular ‘Rephresh’ club nights into “Braindance”, to be held at the Sandsifter Bar & Club in Gwithian. There, they will be offering the latest sounds alongside the classics in every genre of dance music, e.g. Electro/Techno/Drum & Bass/Breaks/House/Hip Hop/Dancehall/Grime/Disco/Funk and Hardcore.

Scheduled for the third Saturday in every month, Rephlex will be regularly featuring artists from a classic roster that includes Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Luke Vibert, Leila, 808 State & Drexciya, to name a few.

However, our hosts are keen to concentrate on the theme of the night, rather than the individuals playing, “Originally, we were all going out to meet like-minds, open minds…”, they say, “It didn’t matter who was playing what or when. It was the general “vibe” that was important, and each event had it’s own. We like good music, dancing, meeting up and having fun, simple as that!”

Now, they want to offer something alternative and stylish for the more discerning or actively-interested ear, especially in Cornwall (shying away from the more common Ibiza/Trance & super-club scene). “We hope for something original and inspiring that people feel part of and can wholeheartedly enjoy.”

Claiming to have something on offer for everyone aged 18 to 88, the new ‘Braindance’ night seems essential to check out!
