Lineup for next FWD at end is great, shame it's at the End really...
I've definitely noticed those synths cropping up everywhere. One thing I do wonder is if a lot of the music in this 'wonky' style is a bit too disposable. A couple of things I've heard have been very exciting to listen to the first time, what with the synths being so fucked up and everything, but haven't stood up to repeated plays. Naming no names.

i wonder the exact same thing about the dubstep that has lead us to this point... if you look at some of the producers named in the column, sonically they are miles ahead of the rest... particularly rustie. i honestly believe the records martin mentioned have too much to offer in terms music and texture. this column is what i have been waiting for along time and its not just because we are mentioned, everyone in that column is what im feeling at the moment and im glad it has been acknowledged.Corpsey wrote:Lineup for next FWD at end is great, shame it's at the End really...

I guess Rustie was destined to end up remixing a tune produced by Rodney 'Darkchild' Jerkins, who pretty much preceded the "wonk" hype by about 5 years when he produced this.
I suppose to me a lot of this stuff feels very poppy (in a strange way) and plastic, but as you say there is hidden depths to it too. For example, outside of a club (tellingly I suppose) I'm already quite bored of the riff from 'Please' but then the riff isn't what makes the tune so much as the drums and sub underneath, and the developing synths about halfway through.jay wrote:i wonder the exact same thing about the dubstep that has lead us to this point... if you look at some of the producers named in the column, sonically they are miles ahead of the rest... particularly rustie. i honestly believe the records martin mentioned have too much to offer in terms music and texture. this column is what i have been waiting for along time and its not just because we are mentioned, everyone in that column is what im feeling at the moment and im glad it has been acknowledged.Corpsey wrote:Lineup for next FWD at end is great, shame it's at the End really...

I think that's the problem with synth riffs they tend towards being very catchy and thus ultimately quite irritating. See Clipz/Pendulum in DNB. I suppose the synths used in tunes by those two are much less unstable though...
Having said that I do like a lot of the stuff martin highlights and certainly find it quite refreshing compared to a lot of dubstep. Where does the recent dubstep obsession with mid-range robotic synths fit into this, by the way? Is 'Spongebob' wonky? I can't think of many better words for that synth, except perhaps 'insane'.
My favourite part of seeing Kode 9 at Bloc was when he dropped in the pb.synth from GZA's '5th Chamber' for about ten seconds. Now there's an example of a tune that uses one of those synths sparingly but effectively. I see Dilla and Madlib mentioned a lot in connection with this wonky stuff (and Timbaland?), I suppose RZA and Dre (Deez Nuts) could have a hand in it too...

Yeah, I agree. Some stuff sounds a bit self-consciously wacky, and that's the stuff that's going to date badly I think. All about the groove, if the wonkiness adds to it, compliments it, great. Lots of exciting music around atmCorpsey wrote:My favourite part of seeing Kode 9 at Bloc was when he dropped in the pb.synth from GZA's '5th Chamber' for about ten seconds. Some great mainstream crossover going on as well - for example Rustie played the instrumental of that Rich Harrison produced Usher tune at fwd>> the other day. So sick!! Those synths and raw drums are just devastating.. the Teriyaki Boys and Pharrell thing is awesome as well.
