My new favourite thing

Post by tuck » Wed Apr 30, 2008 3:23 pm

Sky channel 208 (Pulse) most nights at midnight is showing something called Roller Derby. It's probably the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Basically, a bunch of birds on roller skates race around an oval track and barge into each other. Somehow they score points along the way and eventually there's a winner. I'm sure there's probably some rules but I honestly don't want to know what they are; it would detract from the spectacle. They've all got hilarious names like Sami Automatic, Denise Lightning and (my personal fave) Shanita Stretcher. The commentator says things like "Welcome to Roller Derby; the most amazing sport anywhere in the entire world. What's Roller Derby all about? BEER! The bar's still open folks." What other sporting events do you hear that kind of thing at? There's roller Derby teams all over the USA and even some in England. I so want to party with these girls. In fact, it's my new mission in life.

Sounds like you're not respecting these women for the true athletes that they clearly are...

Believe me I have nothing but the utmost respect for these girls. Anyone who's prepared to change their name to Betty Rumble and don a pair of roller skates in the pursuit of adrenalin-fuelled sporting thrills scores big points in my book. There's not really any fights; it's pretty intense stuff but it's not like ice hockey.

I play with a samba band so I was thinking gigs doing half time entertainment at Roller Derby competitions would probably be my dream occupation right now.

Suzy Shameless. Excellent. It's worth watching for the names alone. Frieda Killigan. Genius.

Agreed. In-lines just don't cut it.
