Hard drive data recovery
I just managed to kill my external hard drive by knocking it over. Wasn't too hard a knock really, but it's been copying files over for a day and a half and i think the combination of over heating and taking the bump was too much.
Sods law that i was just consolidating my old existing hard drives on this one, so it has everything on it, before i was going to put various stuff back on the others so if one died, i wouldn't lose it all...and now i've gone and lost it all!
So the long and short of it is, does anyone have any experience in getting data back off hard drives? Has anyone used any data recovery services (UK based) that were good and not too expensive. This drive has all my msuci ever on it and all my samples too! i need to get it back if i can and just wondered if anyone who has done it before had any advice?
Cheers

i feel for you man, i did the exact same thing with my external hd about 6 months ago.
try data recovery programs before you shell out to get someone to look at it. i managed to get back a fair chunk of my productions and samples etc by running one of these programs.
i just googled for 'data recovery program' but couldn't find the program i used. i seem to recall all the best data recovery programs cost money. try looking for cheap ones or go on a torrent site (naughty naughty.)
there's another thread about this somewhere, people recommend good programs and methods.
don't lose hope yet!

I was reorganising my drives, so i'd moved all my music onto just the one and was converting it all to sort out my library and get rid of all the duplicates i'd pick up through loading tunes onto various computers/drives.
I'll have a look and see if there's any programs that can get anyhting off it, but the clicking sound is never a good sign!

Yeah, sorry, thought i'd said it was clicking before. It's a 750gb Seagate....maxtor are made by the same company as seagate though it thought? There's stuff about maxtor on seagates website at least.
Guess this ones for the bin then. Pissed though becuase i only bought it a month ago! There's a ton and all my music down the drain
My own stupid fault for doing this consolidation thing in such a stupid way!

I have used this program successfully on 3 Hard Drive failures. One was caused by a virus, the other two just failed. A fourth was non-recoverable - but hey 3 out of 4 is pretty good. The process takes all night and all your files are re-labled sequentially.

in Australia at least, we have great success with a company called PAYAM
they have a clean room and remove platters from drives with serious hardware malfunctions (or worse) and retreive usually all the data.
They regularly do work such as recovering 100% of data from hard disks destroyed in fires, etc
no idea if they will deal with you if you are overseas but they are at www.payam.com.au - might be worth an ask if the data is irreplaceable.
price can be high (depending on problem) but (a) it depends on how broken your disk is, and (b) how valuable is your data to you??
