Experimenting!

Its probably how they got it!

I mean if I hear a sick sound I try and make something simular, try all the tricks I know, I end up making a sick sound, probably better than what I was aiming for, duplicating a sound is boring! Get those creative hats on!

Fuck you apathetic forum dwellers..! Even if ten guys asked how to make wobble basslines, we ought to teach them how they're made... One day, they may produce the sickest track you ever heard with their new found knowledge.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TempahProductions, the bass is made from a 808 kick drum with over drive distortion. It is slightly low pass filtered too, after the distortion unit in the signal chain. Synth/sampler---> Distortion---> Filter

For the sucking version of the bass, reverse the kick drum sample. For the slight wobble in the kick drum, use a slight amount of pitch shift or a notch filter sweep before the distortion unit. The distortion unit will pronounce the harmonic changes and make it sound cool :)

If you need fat kick drum samples, download a drum machine called Hammerhead (http://www.threechords.com/hammerhead/download.shtml), and sample or export the kicks from there. It has an excellent overdrive unit built in. Experiment with the different kick drums & the overdrive unit/reverse settings.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can make a good imitation 808 kick drum sound using any synth with pitch bend controls.

Start with a sine wave, then tie a one shot lfo set to ramp/saw tied to the pitch control. Alter the lfo rate and amount/depth of the pitch modulation to taste. The pitch needs to start higher than the root note and drop down to the root note really fast to sound like an 808 kick. (You can also use a fast adsr attack & decay to modulate the pitch bend).
(Take a look at the Oscillator and filter ADSR settings in the pics below for pointers)

Next add a distortion unit to clip the sound. Remember to use the distortion unit as an insert effect in the signal path. Experiment with different types of distortion or waveshaping. It's worth buying Computer Music just for their free waveshaping and distortion vsts..!! :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those of you with Reason...

Take note of the Mod A section, Osc A ADSR settings, the Shaper Settings, the Filter A section and the Filter Env section.

Image

Add a ECF-42 filter unit and wire up the Filter Env out to the Freq CV input on the filter unit as shown.

Image

Play a few low notes (C1 - C2)

It's also worth trying to change the Filter A filter type to Band Pass (BP) or Comb+/- for more varied bass sounds.

Add a distorion unit as an insert or a send after the ECF filter unit for loads more fun :)

Hope that helps!? 8)

TempahProductions, the bass is made from an over driven 808 or 909 kick drum. It is also slightly low pass filtered too.

For the sucking version of the bass, reverse the kick drum. For the slight wobble in the kick drum, use a slight amount of pitch shift or a notch filter before the distortion unit. The distortion unit will pronounce the harmonic changes and make it sound cool :)

You can make a good imitation 909 kick drum sound using any synth with pitch bend controls.

Start with a square wave, then tie a fast adsr attack & decay to the pitch bend. The pitch needs to start higher than the root note and drop down to the root note really fast to sound like a 909 kick. (You can also use a one shot lfo set to ramp/saw tied to the pitch control to make the sound. Alter the lfo rate and amount/depth of the pitch modulation to taste.)

Next add an over drive distortion unit to the signal path as an insert. Experiment with high amounts of drive and low amounts of distorion (or the other way around, I can't remember lol).

Hope that helps!? 8)

Tbh, I'm note sure entirely what processes they used to create their sound, but it is definately based upon the 808 kick drum sample with over drive and filtering...

Also, if you use a very subby kick drum sample with a long tail, distortion that will create similarly fat bass sounds.

Try making the 808 sound 3 times over, then changing the filter type and the filter amount on each of the three. It will give you a better understanding of the way the filters have been used in the original track.

I don't see what the big problem is. A simple question about how you could approach making a sound you've heard seems totally reasonable to me.

You're never gonna perfectly re-create a sound, so the final outcome will always be slightly different. Okay, you should be coming with something new to the table but when getting into a production (in my experience), its a much easier learning curve trying to re-create a specific sound as apose to waiting and stumbling upon a new one (which may never happen).

its also the easiest way to make something original and innovative, that u respect, become rinsed out and tired sounding overnight. sometimes to the point that just a couple of yrs later the originator's work, thru no fault of their own, appears generic and cliched, as if THEY were just jumping on the bandwagon rather than the original source.

but then again, thats life...so carry on....
