Fuck you Cubase, I'm going back to FL......
About 18months ago, I switched from FL to SX3, thinking my level of production had progressed sufficiently that I'd benefit from having a broader palette of DAW functiond to choose from.
However, I was wrong. Instead, I was swamped by Cubase, and my productivity fell considerably, to the point where I haven't got anything finished in about a year.
Never was able to get my MIDI controller rotaries with it, plus even with setting up templates and things, I was taking fucking time to lay down my drum loops, then kinda losing interest in doing anything else.
Consequently, I have uninstalled SX3 and will instead be buying a full bells and whistles version of FL8, together with the optionally extra synths I've heard people praise recently.
Anyone else using FL8 at the moment?

Aye I am I still work more on FL7 though due to theres A LOT of unfinshed work on there, I think FL8 is a great piece of software and you're not very 'restricted' as some people say I haven't used cubase but it just look a bit confusing and stuff.
I have been playing about with a renoise demo lately, I am becoming quite fond of it! I might be working with it quite a bit.

My old copy of FL4 that I used before hand, my workflow was tight. Had beats and things laid down in a matter of minutes, then could spend proper time tweaking. With SX, the drums bits were so painful that I just wasn't feeling it.
Cubase was a beast, and tbh I don't think I've got the right sort of wiring in my brain to appreciate it properly right now.

My workflow on FL8 is pretty fast I have been getting down drums, bass and atmosphere and that down in a hour half/hour and spending A LOT of time getting it mixed down proper, tweaking automation and that, the update to the sequencer is top notch. Ive tried Reason and now having a go with renoise, I dunno FL is just best for my work flow, I can use Reason and Renoise pretty well just FL is my baby

actually it's apparently fucking awful for thatkidlogic wrote:Cubase is too much for me too, way more than necessary for electronic music IMO... for a live band situation though, I can see it being good.

I love Cubase but on ly because I've been using for so long now that I don't have to think about what I'm doing so it becomes completely transparent and allows me to get on with stuff - plus having my new templates in place mean that once I find a sample I want to use or I have a melody in my head then bang I can have a tune u pand running in minutes
Haven't come across templates in cubase before (only got it recently), how do they work?forensix (mcr) wrote:actually it's apparently fucking awful for thatkidlogic wrote:Cubase is too much for me too, way more than necessary for electronic music IMO... for a live band situation though, I can see it being good.![]()

Cubase has been a bit of a bitch to work on but I find it better than reason and fruity having demoed them before. Though there are things that I feel should be simple that are bloody annoying to do, like assigning effects to midi tracks where you have to find a secret passageway. And even just volume mixing if you've got a load of vst's involved, the mixer turns into a metre long nightmare. I'm probably missing some shortcuts though, got a lot to learn..

To make a template create a new project and insert all the channels, fx tracks, eqs, group tracks etc that you normally use and save the project as a template then when you start a new project you can select your templateboyd wrote:Haven't come across templates in cubase before (only got it recently), how do they work?

The mixer has buttons on the side to hide the midi tracks/audio tracks/instrument tracks this helps reduce the size of the mixer I normally click off the midi tracks
To assign effects to VSTi is easy go to the channel view at the left hand side of the screen open the insert panel under the instrument name and select a plug in
Cubase pisses all over fruity loops
From fruity to cubase was the best move in my life.
The work flow on fruity loops is good, dont get me wrong. But ammending loops and melodys is a pain in tha arse.
For getting fast ideas down its good. But the end product always tend to sound like block muisc.
I just wish other daws had the sample browser like fruitys.

Cubase 4 has a sample browser - just I don't have enough money to buy it and apparently there are still some bugs that need ironing outCRYPTIC wrote:Cubase pisses all over fruity loops![]()

dont do it!! im on Fl8 now, only ever really used fruity but got ableton recently and i dont like it :S its like fruity but everythings backwards.kidlogic wrote:Have you tried Ableton, Wub?
I havent been on FL for ages, but my workflow in Live is quick as hell since 5 came out. Going to update to 7 soonish...
Cubase is too much for me too, way more than necessary for electronic music IMO... for a live band situation though, I can see it being good.
Stick with fruity if it's good for you. I personally think the workflow and ease of programming beats in fruity makes it tops.
Big up image line!

Re mixer - I have hidden midi but my problem is using battery for drums, so trying to locate my kick for example will mean finding one channel out of a million sitting there doing nothing labelled battery something.. and because I use a different battery for each bit of the drum kit there are countless battery channels showing in the mixer with only about one in 20 actually doing anything. If any of that makes any sense. I see there's an option to hide channels marked as hide (or something), but I can't see how to mark the channels to hide them!
Re effects on VSTs - the method you describe is cool for audio tracks but not midi, the inserts list doesn't have any of my own effects plug-ins. I have to go into the mixer, try and locate the channel I want and click edit to then add the effect.

Seriously..
I was thinking about switching to Cubase at the end of the year, but fuck that. Once I get my latency problems sorted, There isn't much of a reason to switch.

Doritos, mince, salsa and peppers? Thats it?
I love cubase, but use whatever's best for you. Personally I like the fact that I can record instruments, singers etc. really easily with it, and multitrack from the mpc in no time at all.
I can see where some of it is annoying, but if you put a little bit of time in it does reward you. Plus you can use it with audio, use it with midi, or a combo of the both nicely. Having a beat replace function has saved me a few times, plus it sounds good.
But whatever gets your music out is the best for you!

SCORE!
After installing my new copy of FL8, I remembered in about 3mins just how much I fucking love it.
Had a drum loop and bassline setup from scratch in under 15mins, something that would've taken at least a couple of hours to do under Cubase. Then spent the next couple of hours messing with effects.
Also loved how my Oxygen 8 autodetected and installed, plus I was able to assign rotaries for the first time in about 2 fucking years. Praise be.
