i'm not sure what to do with this tune, it just plods along as it is without really going anywhere. i thought that layering the bass sound would work but that just...adds to the plod.
any suggestions appreciated!

Why not try doing it in something other than halfstep rhythm, the actual syncopation in it's pretty good, but why not try it in full time and see what you get from that. Could keep it halfstep until the drop and then double time it from there until the next drop which would give it momentum. Kind of like the feel to it, maybe add more parts. play the melodies using different synth noises and see if that helps change it around a bit. It's got potential though definitely
Hmm....

Yeah, sorry, does get a bit tricky at times, was trying to explain the permutations to my brother the other day, and he's a guitar type-a-guy, so that was a half-hour well wasted.pk- wrote:cheers for the comments!
er...is that like...two step?why not try it in full time
sorry i'm useless with all this musical terminology lol
I think that you've actually got a two step type of sound in there anyway, the beats behind it actually sound quite garagey. Halfstep is kinda 70bpm, 2 step 140 (less really but just to give you a rough figure). The speed of half step is equivalent to say dub speed or slow hip-hop. Try putting a 4/4 beat on every beat (just to give you an idea, not to keep), and you'll hear the pulse is much faster. Take out bass drums from 2 and 4 and you'll have two step, remove 3 and you more or less have half step. Think more say breakbeat tempo, but with loads more syncopation.
Bit hard to explain to be honest, think a lot of folks think that half step's far more energetic than it is, probably weed based no doubt
Hmm....

sorry wasn't clear, i know what the terms 'half step' and 'two step' mean, but in this case what does 'full time' refer to, two step instead of half step?
^ what a ridiculous sentence that is lol

surely the time signature is unrelated to the tempo? i mean...a lot of drum n bass is two step, but it's at 170bpmHalfstep is kinda 70bpm, 2 step 140 (less really but just to give you a rough figure).

Sorry, most halfstep just sounds slow to me. By full time, I meant rather than keep it at such a sort of plodding speed, try and accentuate the 140bpm pulse of it rather than the slower pulse of 70bpm, which underpins half step. Time signature obviously doesn't make any difference to tempo, but the feel of most half step is at 70bpm with hints of 140bpm (it's actual tempo) rather than actually feeling like 140 bpm.
Or full speed rather than half speed, if that makes sense.
Hmm....
