Making a dance track vs. making an evolving tune

So coming to the dubstep thing from an unusual perspective(not a DNB fan) I find myself gravitating toward the tracks that are most song-writing oriented.

How do people feel about this sort of dynamic?

For instance, artists like Goth Trad, Boxcutter, Distance, all have material than goes from point A to point Z with out necessarily returning to any point in between. Where as many other enjoyable artists have the 128 bars with two drops, with some actually staying fresh sounding to the end.

If anyone can recommend more "progressive dupstep" that'd be awesome. I'm also into Scorn, Prefuse 73, EdiT, Loefah, mostly bass heavy and glitchy.

ANyone have any opinions on the difference between the two schools of thought?

I apparently find myself going for real songs in the future. Nobody really gives a crap about progressive music because it's exhausting listening to it. In my opinion there are two ways to go: Active or Passive

Active Music for listening
Passive Music for chatting

i'm more into house n minimal techno, so thats the kind of vibe im trying to go with...


people that are 'progressive' imo are, hessle audio, skull disco..

but some of the big rave tunes are still good, some of the time..
