Keyboard Sustain Pedal - Whats it do?

Ive noticed my old arse Yamaha keyboard I use as a midi controller has a 1/4 inch plug for a foot switch / sustain pedal....Dont know what it does...

Whats it do? hold the note / keep the key down or summit?

Would like to know ...anyone?

Pedals cost fuckall on ebay.

It doesn't quite hold it just gives it a much bigger release time. The note will fade out still.
