To be honest it isn't necessarily a question of which city is better now, it's more about if anyone I know is going to be up for living in bristol next year. If not, then I'm going to have to seriously consider going to london, although there are disadvantages to that too...

I know peeps that have done that and got on fine tbh, depends on what sort of person you are. My ex-gf moved about 2 years ago when she got a job nr Bristol. She's from Wells which is only about 40mins away, so she knew the city but didn't know anyone living here.

She found her way to www.hijackbristol.co.uk (another board I moderate), found someone on there who had a spare room to rent, and a bunch of people to go out raving with, within a week or two...if you're good at getting stuck in and making the effort then it's pretty easy to find a few peeps to knock about with.


If you've got crew in London, then obviously it's more appealing as you don't have to go through all that, but I do find with Londoners that unless someone is very local to you, you don't see them that often anyway...

I guess although I'm not likely to be the most social person if I move somewhere on my own within one or two dubstep nights of getting so drunk I have no shame I'll know a few people lol

Laurie lives in a place called Redland, but basically he's really close to 'The Arches', which is at the bottom of Gloucester Rd - one of the main thoroughfares in central Bris. Near the student/hippy areas of St Andrews, Montpelier & Stokes Croft. Rooted Records is just round the corner... there is a lot of posh commercial/residential regeneration underway in the area though so clubs are closing and luxury flats are mushrooming.

The St Andrews/Montpelier axis is definitely a very good place to look, although great flats are hard to come by so patience is required. Gumtree Bristol is worth checking when the time comes, as is Rightmove.

Otherwise a lot of people live in Bedminster/Southville which is the other main 'nice-ish' residential area with a large young population. I can't imagine you'd want to live in Clifton (classic 'posh'/rich student area).


£350 pcm will get you quite a lot for your money if you're sharing. I'm househunting atm and looking at places in shared houses priced from £220-£340 per person pcm. Bear in mind council tax is pretty high in Bris.

having been to bristol for five minutes on the way to cardiff i'd say that i prefer london

i don't know much about this, but the same could be said for London from a non-Londoner's POV- Turnmills a British clubbing institution whether you like to admit it or not, closed. The whole of Kings Cross Freight Yard- encompassing big clubs like The Key, Canvas and The Cross, closed. There's been lots of discussion about this in the media, but at the same time new (IMO exciting) places are emerging all the time, and from what I gather/remember from last posts, the big clubs aren't fo you anyway Corpsey?

As for the general Bristol/London argument, it is really a matter of personal choice and preference. Totally depends on what appeals to you. For me personally, if I had the choice i'd say Bristol (but that is with the hindsight of living and working in London my entire life). Big sprawling massive cities are fun, but quite overwhelming and it is hard to get to know on the level of a small city not just in terms of places but also people.

i wouldn't necessarily say there's a decline in nightlife - I reckon there's more than enough stuff to choose from every weekend. Yes, there are clubs closing, but there are others opening this year, and promoters round here are fairly resourceful.

The smoking ban has done far more to harm clubland than one or two venues shutting down. I can't know what you would consider an adequate level of nightlife in terms of number of events, number of different venues and variety of lineups, but I don't think that Bristol is particularly wanting.

From what I've seen Bristol has a ridiculous amount of stuff going on (note to fanboys: I'm talking about more than just dubstep) not only in relation to the size of the city but just in general. But then London is the capital of the country and where everything happens.

bristol is the endz - there's nothing better than strolling down gloucester road, dodging sapphire the cross dressing paedo and listening to peverelist on the old mp3 player, getting to rooted records, takin of your headphones and saying "alrite" to Peverelist who's usually behind the counter.

or you meet someone who says "yea apparently Jakes reloaded my tune 3 times last night! oh yeah, you're that guy i got a myspace message off right?"

or you meet little year 6 kids who go "oh yeah i love Asian Dub Foundation! and Skream!"

on the other hand - never ever ever wait at a bristol bus stop. if you are so lucky that the bus eventually comes it's usually faster to walk [and £3 cheaper and u get less aggro from stinkin idiots]

bristol is also a good place to be 16 because polish bouncers just have no idea about your age

Or you can move to Brighton, pay £300 a month for a flatshare and with the spare £50 you are now saving put towards a travel card and 45min train journey to London Victoria or London Bridge and still enjoy the Brighton nightlife (ive always assumed thats where you live right?) and Londons nightlife if needed.

Portishead isn't much to look at. Bit of a retirement village plus a massive development of (atmittedly quite nice) seafront apartments. Not a great deal goin on tho...

btw you're thinking of 'The Arches' - the place where Cheltenham Road meets Glos Rd.

I grew up in london till 18 and then lived in bristol for 4 years... at first i did miss those little things like the clubs where everyone knows ur name and the insanely easy tube system that even a blonde can handle.... etc etc.

that lasted about a month!

I could never move back to London now, so if i ever left Brighton for another UK place it'd be straight back to Bristol - no questions. I serially miss it.
The cider, festies and free party scene are totally on it, unfortunately somerset and west police really do suck i'm afraid - even moreso than usual you've been warned! There are some serious rigs out there and some wicked nights if you dig around.... oh yeah did i mention the cider? and the weed...

I popped back in the summer for a week and there seems to be a lot less crackheads floating around compared to back in the old days 10 yrs or so ago - it's really cleaned up.... i think they may have all followed me to brighton tho
