What do you guys first to when it comes to producing Dubstep?
Create a beat first and get in your head how your tune is gonna sound,
or make some bass, thin about a beat and work around that point?
Share how you come about creating a new beat

yeah really depends.

sometimes i'll just hear drum sounds i like and start there, other time's i'll be fuckin with a synth and start with bass or somethin else.

hell i've started with a sample and by the time i finished the tune the sample wasn't even in it anymore.

i usually start by posting rinsed subjects on dubstep forum without bothering to search out the half a dozen or so identical threads that came before

then, like 90 percent of ppl, most of the time i go onto doing drums cos thats the fun part

or at least thats what i read on dubstep forum

Actually, thinking about it, I usually start with a bass patch.

I tweak my bass patch until it sounds filthy, then add either a second bass or a pad.

Once I have two basses and a pad down, I browse half heartedly through the Reason Refills in search of Rex files that might fit my newly formed dubstep track...

Tiring of the Reason's Rex's, I next reach for my unlimited supply of drum samples and layer 5 snares and three hi hats to make a custom beat.

I add reverb at this point, and start my arrangement.

Finally, once I have 32 bars, I bounce it down and send it to everyone intending to come back to it to finish one day in the distant future....!

I usually start by posting on a thread that has been posted before, moaning about how it has been posted so many times before because it must make me feel so pissed of wasting 2 mins of my time that I need to wast another 2mins of everyones else's time by posting a completely useless belittling reply.



in answer to you question I usually start with laying out whatever pattern I have in my head, this can be drums bass a riff even a lead synth, build up a loop, quick and not to filled out, then think about progressions, variation for second drop, fills, intro etc, get a general layout for the track and then start beefing it up. This is at least how I go about making any tune as I have yet to make an attempt at dubstep.

it depend's on whats inspired me to get on with making a new tune,

it could be some beat/bassline floating around in my head, some synth sound i've just made, beats or melody's etc from a record i've just listened to...then i turn on the work station...and begin channeling it...and like i say depending on what i'm trying to achieve (not plagiarize) determines how i begin a tune.

differs each time, but rarely i can just sit and force out a tune, well, i could but boundaries and direction help guide me through it...most of the unfinished tunes i have are a result of having nothing in particular driving me to get creative.

Come up with the drums.

Make a baseline.

Play it to myself an mates.

Ask them and myself, what the tune brings to mind.

Whatever it is, add synths, vocals and SFX that mirror this theme.

Then make the tune sound good, lengthen it out to around 4 mins, EQ, Master, release. (all of which I never get round to)

Always start with my drums, then bass, then synths and so on.

Drums first, and then a melody, and bass last, as I don't like making a bass that doesn't go with the melody.
