It's just a position I've ended up in by default because a small part of the new wave of dubstep audience, with their false impression that because they express their every spasm on an internet forum, think they're pushing the scene forward, can sometimes put me off the scene as a whole. While I'm still involved in this music, they can fuck off. [laughs]'

how anyone can call tunes like portal and quantum lifeless is beyond me.

people give spaceape a really hard time, and i don't understand that either. i have a feeling that the people that don't respond to his vibe, either don't like dub or roots, or just don't know their reggae; period.

there's a long line of dread poets and they're far from lifeless..

TBH this is a big problem in the scene as a whole. People being negative with no actual justification for being so. It is interesting to see how forums attitudes change with new people coming into the scene and not neccesarily for the better.

or GLASS. i need an emo-hug after listening to that sometimes ; )

i think in all honesty space-ape is way over a lot of peoples heads and since he's not chatting about stabbing people, or robbing, or how tough he is, people just write him off. too many people don't actually want to think. or make the attempt to interpret what he is trying to get across.

it's pretty sad and unfortunate.

I really like Spaceape and I'm on the record as being an almost embarrasing Kode 9 fanboy, and several of the tunes on MotF are all time percies.

But I'm not really convinced by it as an album. I don't know, I find a lot of the K9 / Spaceape tunes work much better in the context of a mix where they're knocking up against Kode's grimier and ruffer stuff. Across a whole album in the same style, the individual tunes don't reach out and grab me in the same way.

an album representing every aspect of grandmaster 9 is nearly impossible to do or it can really sound very random
see it as a part of an amazing piece of work divided on several big axis.

it's an interesting point you make, because one thing about 9 that's been the same from day is that no two sets will be similar; and no two 12"s will sound the same. i saw him play this non stop techno set at fabric early this summer, and then more recently one of the deepest and dubby sets in new york. all directions, different feels, different ranges of 120-140. really hard music to describe but always a heavy journey.

if you follow his stuff from fat larry's skank to things like woozy remix and konfusion, its a drastically mixed bag of experiments. not only in time signatures and bpms, but where the basslines and snares are falling too. the reason why he stands out in this sound is that you can put a 9 tune from 2003 up against a 9 tune from 2008, and they still sound like 9 even though all the elements inside are radically different. maybe the synths are detuned and the production isn't as crackly as the old days but's its still sub warfare. its still got that glaswegan x factor.

He's from the other Scottish city isn't he?

Glaswegian X Factor sounds like some incredibly strong sun cream that means you will never tan, at all, ever.

as for memories of the future, to me its full of life... glass is so soulfull and sweet, curious and portal have a driving power that makes me move and tracks like quantum and backward fill me with a wonderfull dread i feel reflected in my surroundings... i love what wo said about 9 samurai!

woland23 wrote:
Listen to the technocolour synths in quantum or the undulating bass in correction and the horn samples in 9 samurai (taken from akira kurasawa's 7 samurai). These sounds reflect concepts such as honour, sacrifice and war that are prevalent in the film. Kode9 used these to great effect. To say these things are lifeless seems a little backward. The lyrics are reflective on life processes, of the way people think and act. I think it is subdued in parts, and looks on a dismal future, but that doesn't make it dead. However, if someone wants to hear death in it, then that's how they will recieved it

kode definately isnt for everyone.... what makes dubstep versatile and fresh is the diversity displayed by the artists, thank god not all of us like the same style and moods - we would never progress! it does make me laugh when people get all derogatory when they dislike or dont agree with something i.e. dubzombies and such

When I first tried finding out what dubstep was all about, I got my hands on Memories of the Future. And that changed everything. Kode 9 is one of the best producers in my collection, and Spaceape is one of the best lyricists. I wouldn't say that the whole album is brilliant, but I would still say that a lot of it is untouchable. It's very thought-provoking.
