I recently had a conversation with my sister who informed me that over the Christmas period she heard my dad and his mate talking highly of a dubstep/garage band called Burial who have subsequently been a big hit on Radio 1 with the track “Archangel”. On more than one occasion as a teenager I remember turning the corner of my street and hearing heavy Dub bass lines reverberating from my house .Now I know what you are thinking, but it isn’t true. Banish the images of some sad old fart forcing his behind into skinny jeans, donning a new era cap and coming out with words like “safe” accompanied by some moronic hand gesture. I have listened to many of my friends’ conversations before on how our parents’ tastes are so “lame” and they were surprised to hear that I wasn’t of the same opinion. I credit much of my own broad musical tastes to listening to my dad’s CD collection as a child. He was in fact the first person to play me drum and bass. The truth of the matter is my dad is passionate about music and stays liberal in his tastes. The moral of this story is that the gap between you and your parents isn’t as wide as you imagine, in some ways they’re probably quite cool. I’m dedicating this column to Edmund Lanchester Proctor, keeping the Penrith Dub scene alive.

on a related note, my mom loves plastician.

I bet most folks' parents have better taste than their kids...they're not blindly following a genre because its "new" ..They have some perspective on music and can see that dubstep is just another in a long line of electronic music genres.

parents usually don't jump into a new genre simply because it seems adults, once they hit a certain age, just stop listening to new music and only listen to what they know, which is stupid to me, but if you look around, seems true. i've introduced my parents to some bands that i like and they enjoy, but they would never go out of their way to investigate further. dubstep could be what they have loved all long, they just don't know it yet and in most cases, wouldn't give the time needed to investigate the genre further.

not from what i've seen. its not an age thing. I think its a people thing. Some people do this, others dont. my mom still searches for unique music, yet my dad, is pretty set in his ways. do what you like, i say.

My mum came back from work late the other night and was asking me what dubstep was all about as she had been listenign to it in the Radio on her way home and enjoyed it. She also kept telling me how she liked Flying Lotus...

my mum seems to love to tell me every now n then to "caaaaalm doooown, just caaaalm downnn" wen i get a bit carried away.

thats as close to sharing music with my parents i get.

haha. man, after discovering mca was a buddhist, mum was always taking me to 'take the middle path' (i.e. calm down), because that was what buddhists do. should never have mentioned the beasties to her. still going on about that one, 12 years later.
