"Dark" Bassline

Post by ashen » Thu Jul 24, 2008 12:48 pm

Is most bassline geared towards the commercial side of things? Most of what ive heard is just sugar coated trash...

Any producers pushing a sparser, deeper sound?

Burgaboy, earlier T2 releases (Monster Dubz EP), Dub Melitia, the two Nastee Boi EP's on Northern Line Records... ermm... X5 Dubs, that Yozzie B bit from a while back has a few dark moments.

Anyone else?

This is definitely the side of Bassline I'm feeling.

Maybe check out some Hard4 artist like Morph, H3rbzman, Klassic (basically the J3DI crew)

Veteran, Agent X, Bogeyman, Wideboys (check out http://www.discogs.com/release/746068).

I was into Bassline once upon a time.. 2003-2005 maybe. It was raw and didn't sound like the mickey mouse it is today.

thats the beauty of bassline. it takes in a whole range of influences including cheesy as fuck garage from back in the day and suage coated commercial dance. Think you have to just take it for what it is and not belittle it for not being what you consider 'serious music'.

Also bridged a gap between dance sub-genre's & female audiences too. This is only a good thing.

You can tell it didnt come out of london cus it doesnt take itself half as seriously as most other sub-genres that are made out to be some youth-culture revoloution by the Guardian until it gets saturated and we move on to the next fad (Crunk-Wobble-3 Step).

I would rarely sit down at home and listen to Addicted to Bassline all the way through but if some of that cheesy-formulaic OTT bassline comes on in a club and im in the right mood....

Any big Veteran tunes to look out for? I can get hold of some but got no mp3 samples like so dont know wether to go out on a limb.

Im not really feelin Burga Boy to be honest, only got that record with 'I can love you' on and the only track Im into is 'Boi Boi' but I cant play even play that cos I got my own MC's when I play innit

Do you know where you can buy hard4? Or download some mixes?

Could you please point me some mixes from this era.

I've always got an image that the sound was back then more "sophisticated", and niche sound took things rawer. But I really know nothing about the 03-05 era :P

dbl post sry

but i wouldnt really say there was a bassline scene in 2003-2005 since really it didnt start until late 2006, back then it was all bassline house and organs, which are more cheesier than the stuff these days

Klassic has an EP out, "Neon", that has a few bits on it. Saw you could pick it up at his site (http://www.dj-klassic.co.uk) but that seems to be down.

Actually you can get it here:

http://newbreedrecords.co.uk/index.php? ... yword=neon

Command and Conquer is BWAD.

Dj Klassic Mix from 06 haven't listened yet though:

http://www.directnlive.blogspot.com/

Let me know if it's good.

Was told J3DI have and album on the way... but other than that, please, you tell me. :)

I don't know about that, whilst it's true there has been a shift from the vocally/organ house/speed garage style I have heard some bits, like "DJ Cameo and J Sweet - High Grade (4x4 Remix)", from 02 that fit in nicely with the new bassline 4x4 (Mr. V/Burgaboy) spectrum.

Can anyone point me in the direction of anymore pre-07 bouncey-gritty-bassline tracks like this:

DJ Cameo and J Sweet - High Grade (4x4 Remix)

http://www.hardtofindrecordsrecordstore ... 8627_1.mp3

If I'm talking out my arse set me straight.

Easy

well tbh there was always the odd track produced back then that could now be classed as 'bassline' i know dj narrows did some stuff like this also check out outlaw breaks and gemma fox - dutty, carly bond - not wise )scandalous unlimited remix) also stuff like the cameo and sweet tune id recommend check out some black ops releases coz they did a few 4x4 mixes of their tracks.

for me ppl like dj veteran, zibba, dj q started the bassline tunes, then when platnum released there first tune 'over the heartache' jamie duggan did a sick remix that blew up the bassline scene, then northern line records came along in late 06 and made the biggest movements in bassline i think.

hmm i've always thought this. is there any reallly dark stuff?

not to belittle any of the scene cos i havnt checked enough of it (mainly because all i've stumbled across is that said mickey mouse stuff)

but is there any of it out there with sounds that leave you asking how the fuck they made it?

any more leftfeild stuff? any names?

if not, there's always the dark breaks.

Cool I get what you are saying, it's just hard to pick through everything looking for those individual tracks that have that new 4x4 style to them.

Bassline is seriously hit & miss for me. Some tunes can be real bangers, but the majority of them all just sound the same with gash vocals.
I'm feelin' the more grime side of things with the MCs. DJ Q & Nastee come to mind for this sort of sound.
