How many producers have you heard saying this now. Frankly it takes the piss.

Hear me out, about a year ago now I was having a chat with benny page having just seen him and benga play in sheffield. Hed never really seen dubstep work in a club but benga had truely smashed it on that night. I asked him what he thought and he said

"Well it was really eye opening, I really fucking enjoyed it. It works on so many levels" He was beaming, full of excitement
"Think imgunna have to get some tunes on the go" You could tell he wanted to explore the sound and now look, his tunes are phat and hes got his own sound.

Now im not going to go into too much detail but ive spoken to a few other dnb producers and ive heard interviews etc and the fucking lack of any sort of knowledge, passion and desire to actually contribute to the scene other than " think il make a dubstep tune actually" is disgraceful. Its damaging to the scene and saturates the market with absolute bollocks. Most of the time the tripe these producers come out with isnt even dubstep anyway...

Absolute bollocks - some of the freshest producers in the scene come from different production backgrounds. Not everyone was conceived and born inside in a pirate radio station listening to El-B and Steve Gurley.

has too much mids....not enuff dub reggae....there are too many new guys/labels/people/mp3s in general....vinyl sounds better and none of it is 'real' dubstep

that bout covers it rite? can we just shut down this main section since thats all people discuss past their radio shows/releases here....

dubstep is a sub genre of drum and bass anyway so i don't see your problem

lol think you totally missed the point of this, its not about policing the scene its about artists making tunes for the love of making tunes not because "everyones doing this so i might as well do it too"

im not trying to hate on anyone I just think there are a lot of really talented producers grafting hard trying to get noticed then some tnuc with a back catologue of half decent d n b tunes makes a standard clone track and gets picked up just cos of who they/he is...

i mean come on....

but what's the difference between an established producer getting infected with dubstep and wanting to make a dubstep tune, and some random kid like me wanting to make a dubstep tune..? I ask...it can still be sincere

almost a bit like when rappers suddenly become actors because they want to...and all the passionate drama students have to make do with being the back-end of the donkey at Digbeth's town hall nativity play. I know what you're saying though, but consumers want the best and couldn't care less where the integrity is. It's just hard cheese for those who are passionate about they do.

this 'passion' thing is a misnomer, i'd say.

i mean, take the likes of breakage and benny page - they're not flash in the pans. they've been grafting and releasing tunes for years to get where they are. if they want to release a dubstep tune - which lets be honest, will probably only sell a quarter of what one of their DnB releases would, so it's obviously not for the money - then fair play, i think they've earned the right, and it's good that they're still being influenced and excited by new music after so long in the game.

if 'those who are passionate about what they do' are indeed passionate then they will not feel bitter or jealous about stuff like this - they will realise that it just takes a few years of graft until they too will be in a similar position...

nothing, the difference is hearing music and saying "I can IMITATE that", or saying "I can bring my own influence to that and do something new with the music".

Whether you're a bedroom producer or fucking Goldie, if you're not doing something original then you're not adding much to the scene.

yea thats a good thing, if an established producer gets into the sound, appreciates it and thinks yea id like to make this sound, all good (hense what i said about benni page)

Im not naming names but I know a big name producer/d n b label owner who has time and again said dubstep is shit blah blah blah showed no interest and is now deciding to bash out some tunes because he "might as well."

How can a tune be anywhere near good if your hearts not in it? I thought a lot more people would agree with me on this issue you know, im well surprised at the response this thread has got...

Big up breakage and benny page btw, these guys ARE doing it because they love the sound...

Oh yea and i totally understand that the big guns had to graft and work hard to get where they are now, totally, but they are getting away with sub-par tunes (which would normally not see the light of day cos they are crap) without putting the same sort of effort in.
