I think that Dubstep might aswell be a subgenre of DnB... a lot of the tunes fall into the same formulaic wobble, and a lot of Dubstep DJs, just like DnB DJs (and Djs from other genres I guess) only play Dubstep tunes, and half the time they only play their own tunes or tunes released by their mates*, and there's the same stupid 'holding back the release of ltd dubplates' thing going on too** - all of this happens in DnB, UK Garage too, and I bet to an outsider, it's just the latest brand of what would be called UK dance music.

* makes you wonder if their record collection is only a few dozen deep
** goes back to Jamaican soundsystem culture

i dont think there are as many rifts between the sub genres over there tbh

Id like to point out that drum and bass (in its liquid form or in its evil form) can still blow you away its just that usually the people that compare dubstep with d n b are the ones that like dj pleasure or some jump up bullshit.

Fuck the hardcore continuum.

Grooverider calls jungle "house music".

Kiwis call it all "doof music".

It's all disco in my book.

i think wether you like it or not dnb and dubstep will always have a link as alot of people are introduced to it from it being in room 2 at a dnb event.

especially if you live outside of London.

but tbh, who really gives a shit?

most that i know were/are.

i can't speak for everybody, but since ukg never really lasted all that long here, the direct link between the two seems to be missing on this side of the pond.

there are those of us who have followed it from there, but i think we're in the minority. and even from there, most who were into 2step were junglists before that.

To me it sounds alot like early drum and bass - when the beats were more funky and not rollin' so much - like DJ Zinc style...

...but without a doubt, dubstep is it's own thing.

I remember saying once(in my opinion again, and I am just a listener), that it is the first real hybrid of drum and bass that stands solidly on it's own - that formulaically was solid as something new and completely autonomous within itself...

I can definatly hear the progressive house influence as well - maybe that's the garage thing the UK heads are referring to..

musically though - it is the best and strongest most interesting new sub genre - I'm in for it, I like the sound very much.

It would be nice though to hear how some early or serious producers came about synthesizing their influences to get to this sound.

I'm fairly sure they weren't working from a vacuum...
