London - The Bug/Kode9/Fly Lo - 02/08/08

Post by badga tek » Sun Aug 03, 2008 12:14 pm

Sadly what looked on paper like being unbelievably sick turned into a bit of a shambles.

They didn't let anyone in til about 11 despite everyone getting there at 10 or before to try and get a ticket. Then, the sound kept fucking up. Kept getting quieter suddenly for no reason and then eventually back to normal. Then at 2 it just either cut out completely or they just stopped it to get it sorted. I left about 2.30.

Bit gutted really. Dunno if it got sorted. I managed to avoid seeing Flying Lotus again which is well annoying. Kode was pretty good from what I could hear tho. Played some funky at the beginning. And The Bug seemed to playing some decent tunes too. Sadly the problems with the sound really ruined the MC-DJ dynamic so ended up being a bit odd hearing Flodan and Warrior Queen quite loud over really quiet music.

Just a bit of a shame overall

I left at 2:30 as well...pretty shambolic. Really feel for the Bug actually, he must be screwin. Kode was pretty good though, before the sound really fucked up...Spaceape in the crowd down the front was a lot.

Whats happened to 3rd base...I haven't been back since the last DMZ there when they moved upstairs to Mass, I swear the speakers used to be a lot bigger (or is that just my memory?).

Best club space/system in London when the old DMZs ran there...hope last night was just a one-off disaster.

Was very disappointing, the queue was a complete mess. It was like they'd never done a ticketed event before. Everyone, whether with tickets or not was in the same queue. Loads of people with tickets were right at the back even at 12. Turned up at 10, queued till after 12 when they finally decided to tell people that chances of getting in were very slim.

Choice between waiting an unknown amount of time in front of a very poor door crew that was getting progressively nastier and catching the last train home? My bed won out, thanks. Was gonna be horribly rammed and absolute pain to get drinks anyway. Didn't really feel much like that after a whole night at The End and 2h of queueing boredom.

Really gutted I missed this, feel for those who did manage to get in but didn't have a good night.

Well I arrived with my mates at 10 and saw the queue and thought "no chance" even though we'd pre-booked tickets.

Went up to the one bouncer they had on the door and said I'd pre booked and he told me to queue with everyone else. Anyhow, we got in fairly quickly, but it was rammed with a massive queue still outside.

The sound system, in a nutshell, was one of the poorest I've heard in a long time. I was by the cloakroom and the engineer kept going in and out of the room where all the sound gear was. He really didn't look like he knew what he was doing. I ended up in the room with him and another dude trying to stop the amps from clipping.

This is where I felt sorry for the engineer, cos the MC's were maxing their levels on the mixer and that was what kept clipping the amps. In the end a main fuse went in the box (which it took me to point out to them), and they decided to replace a bass amp.

It was sorted for Lotus, and funnily enough, no MC with him and the sound stayed perfect throughout his set...

All in all, very badly organised, very badly managed and very badly engineered.

I defo wont be going back to 3rd Base anytime soon...

yeah was a right shambles.

turned up before ten and was right at the front of the queue. didn't get in till just before midnight, having spent two hours getting shouted at by the bouncers and having the shit squeezed out of us.

the security were muppets. my friend had her breasts squeezed by the female bouncer looking for drugs.

the sound system was cutting out right from the word go, even when kode9 was playing without an mc. the volume when the bug played was a joke. it was all so stop and start that i couldn't be arsed to stay for flying lotus - the only person i really wanted to check last night.

and £4 for cans of warm stella?!! wankers.

was really in two minds as to whether to go or not. should have stayed in i reckon.

kevin martin looked like he was having the worst night of his life.

Guttin. It should've been one of the best nights of the year. Kode9's set was propa dancey when the sound was half decent though :Q:
I want my beats to sound like arrhythmia.

yea thought the organisation was pretty fucked, although i had web tickets so got in in about 3 seconds at 11.

kode9 was still good though, top selection as always, must have seen him play about 5 times this year.

the bug was dissapointing even without all the sound fuck ups though...man may be an amazing producer but hes not much of a dj, didnt really build up his set or anything, just seemed to be the hits played quite randomly. i was fucking battered though so maybe i was just distracted.

only watched about 15 minutes of flying lotus which was ok, but not spectacular, im not much of a fan of watching people on laptops though. still had a wicked time but more just hanging out than being swept away by the music...

fuck a four pound stella as well.

Didn't make it in, but safe to say I'm in agreement that both the general attitude and the organisational abilities of the door staff left a hell of a lot to be desired. Would have been exceptionally miserable on the way home were it not for the fact that the punters all around our part of the queue were about as sound as it gets. Big respect to the chin-up crew! There's always a next time...

the bug album launch

Post by alice in wonderland » Mon Aug 04, 2008 9:33 pm

its a shame that such a sick line up was let down by such bad organisation- i agree. i was in the queue since about 9:50 and got in about 2 hours later. They eventually managed to get the sound sorted out but not soon enough- all the artists apart from flying lotus were pretty screwing- seem to remember warrior queen shouting: THIS MIC IS DRIVING ME FUCKING CRAAZZZYYYY'

i stayed till the end cos i was never gonna give up on it, flying lotus did a heavy set, i was mostly gutted about the bug and mcs not being able to make the most of it- i agree with whoever said that the bug's djing skills aren't really that impressive- as soon as an mc got into one of the tunes (which were impressive)the tune would be cut off into a next one- no flow and this in my opinion contributed to the whole erratic tone of the night.

ah well i am an optimist, still glad i went but just goes to show how important the venue and sound system is, and in this case unfortunately 3rd bass flopped. all the artists did their best tho so hats off to em

ninja tunes apology

NinjaTune000 napisał:
Ninja Tune / The Bug would like to apologise for events that took place at the "London Zoo" album launch. Fault lies at the management and security at Third Base. We had assurances over what equipment that would be available to us, but the management had failed to realise a previous night had blown the bass speakers and the club night upstairs at Mass were using the monitors we had been promised. It appears 3rd Base totally underestimated how popular this night we would be, we stopped selling tickets at the 200 mark but the walk up was such on the night they were not prepared. After trying all ways of sorting the sound, The Bug said to the venue that he wanted to either pull the show or for the venue to get in the right soundsystem, they flatly refused so we had no choice but to proceed. They overdrived an underpowered system and this resulted in frequency loss and ultimately amps blowing. No blame can be put on the soundmen at the show itself. Their assistance was admirable.

And as for the total rudeness and disorganisation of the door staff we can only apologise, we could not have predicated that on the night, they even threatened ninja staff too. We will be looking into doing a special Bug show in the near future. Apologies once again. Any questions/comments please email ninja@ninjatune.net

was a bit of a let down but these things do happen from time to time, i really enjoyed warrior queen and flowdan on the mic together, was special.

im glad everyone tried to make the most of it though! security were ridiculous, all of them worrying about getting people off the stairs it seemed. at one point when going out for a smoke i was told to 'get the fuck off the stairs' whilst walking down them?! i found it quite amusing really.

i hope they can put on another night soon, would be good at plastic people or something as a ticket only event i reckon...

Poor Kevin. What a fucking nightmare. After working so hard to finish an album, organising an event and then to be fucking screwed by the venue.

It's bullshit.

Yeah was well impressed by the ninja dude trying to sort stuff out at the front of the queue when the big security dude kept poking away at him pretty much non-stop for like a minute. Excellent calmness.

Look forward to the special night!

It was the venue which let people down, but come on Ninja...this is a party at the very club where DMZ had to be moved upstairs in the middle of the night to accomadate the hundreds queueing outside in March 2006. You can't but dubstep (plus FlyLo, who is in case anyone hadn't realised, massive now) on at a rave and expect it not to be mobbed. Surely it should have been an all ticketed affair?

The Bomb Squad, Bug, Kode9, Mala etc night a few month back wasn't ticketed and there were no issues, there's no tickets for DMZ either.

DMZ is upstairs though - much bigger capacity. But interesting what you say, I wonder why there was so much bother at this one then :?:
