There was a night called MUD at Q-bar i believe but i don't know if this is still on, on the whole Cardiff is shit for underground dance music. Unless you like house/ D'n'B

Right, well for records shops its quite an easy one. Catapult records is in the high street arcade (the undercover bit by the castle) and stocks a decent proportion of the dubstep releases as they come. The guy who runs it is a decent bloke too, who while he doesn't really focus fully on dubstep, he has a decent enough knowledge to help you out and has pretty good taste imo. Its a good place! :D

As for nights, its not an easy one. Me, a couple of other guys and the jigsore soundsystem crew set up that Mud night 8-9 months ago or so in Conti's bar. Since then, ALOT of shit has gone down. And to cut one of the longest stories of my life short, me and gary aswell as the jigsore crew are no longer affiliated with the night/the thing that runs it. Its on every tuesday during term time at the basement/10 feet under club i believe, and the place does have a reasonable (although not the nicest sounding) soundsystem in place.

As for other nights, there are a few decent drum and bass/breakbeat nights that come along from time to time (the welsh club often hosting them) and quite a few will have a dubstep sideroom. Dont expect it to be loud/full though.

As for me, gary and the jigsore crew. We're going to be returning to Q-Bar at the start of the term with a new night thats basically going to be a continuation of where Mud left off there. Will probably be a little bit more eclectic, as we now have 2 rooms to play around with, but will always feature a dubstep room that I think the plan is to have on rotation between the big room and the smaller (and imo better!) back room. All this will be backed up by the jigsore soundsystem too, which is basically off the hook. Definitely the best sounding/most pressure ive heard from a soundsystem in Cardiff.

So yeah, you got catapult for records. A few nights here or there around Cardiff sporting some good music and the occasional bit of dubstep (club delight have brought some big names in eg. oris jay, headhunter, hijak...) Our night (which i think will be called Duplo) should have lots of good music from reggae to breakcore, with a dubstep mainstay (and a collosal system) and I think will be every other week. Current plan I believe involves having a big night once a month where we'll be bringing down some big names, with local DJs/producers always welcome to come do their thing.

Oh yeah, and theres mud too...

yeh gota biggup spillers. they dont have a massive dubstep selection but what they do get in is always quality. really good prices too, all their hyperdub records are 4.99! same with planet mu. great group of peeps who work in there aswell, they really love music, are open to new sounds and will always try to get hold of stuff for you.

as for nights i feel like cardiff is really stuck in its ways right now with DnB having a complete monopoly on the "underground" electronic music scene. but i'd check out MUD in the basement, wiggles new night Duplo (guna be reachin this meself, all about the back room bruv  ), holodeck - the monthly techno night does a dubstep room bi-monthly in welsh clwb.

also theres gonna be a new night starting around september not sayin much right now but i'll update the thread when i have more info, and hopefully we will see the return of dub delight and bonus level bass (newport) soon.

its been a slowburner over the last year, but gota give props to all the promoters whove been pushin the sound (matthew caveman, dave shaw, the wiggle baron, james mud, aidan, tom servo, mondo), and i hope this septembers influx of students on cardiff brings some open minds.

anyway i think you were chattin bout jazzsteppa and ikonika at the time but would love to see blackdown, appleblim based on mixing ability and selection and blatantly toasty cos mans a legend.

dubstep in caardiff

Post by subsection » Thu Sep 11, 2008 6:53 am

the scene isnt as bad as people are making out, jigsaw do a dubstep night weekly or fortnightly, but the venues vary. and mud but on nights fairly often. and they usually have a dubstep set on the one mission nights, which will be every thursday in the welsh club, room 2. will post stuff up if i hear of anything good. peace.
