320 mp3s good enough to cut to dub?

is it worth it or do you have to have wav/flac?

yes they are. mastering will help with harmonics etc.... if you are in a hurry/only have 320s it's fine although obviously wavs are preferred.

I thought that the fact an mp3 is a compressed audio file it wasnt best for cutting?

I've always gone with Wav's and flat mixes rather than one with limiting or final compression.

When you cut the track needs to be open to the techy so he can pull at freq's he wantd to stand out or hide, if the file is a final ready for DJ's to play on CD then its been mastered by you before you give it out, so its prepacked.

I have always been told to do 2 mixes for your track when mixing down. 1 for dj's to play on CD decks which has been mastered as best as you can at studio but another on which has NO mastering done on it nor is the final overall compression added. This leaves it open for the techy to play with.

yeah bruv this is what i do too... i do a flat mix with nothing on the master at all to send to the mastering house, then i do a botch job home master to be best of my shitty mastering ability and use that to play out or hand around until i get the proper masted back.

However as you know, things aren't always as easy as that when it comes to getting tunes that people have sent you or given you cut and you have a set that night and you have to do this and that and blah blah blah... you know the score.

So basically i just wanted to know that if you had a 320 that someone had sent you then you could get it cut if you wanted. I knew it would never be as good as a wav but would it be good enough to play out ?

anyway, i'mn to broke to get many cut at the moment anyway

I think some of you guys are getting mp3 data compression mixed up with audio compression.Data compression in its many guises reduces the amount of 1's and zero's in order to make the file smaller which can be sent over the internet quicker because the file is smaller.Audio compression reduces the dynamic range of AUDIO.I always prefer a wav with no audio compression but the question was is a 320 rate mp3 ok to cut from the answer is yes assuming we are talking about a dubplate.

320kbps mp3 is perfectly adequate to cut to a dub.

Unless you had pristine quality needles, a perfect signal chain, and studio quality monitors to listen to it on, and almost superhuman hearing, then you're not going to notice any difference between a 320 mp3 and a wav.

Anyone who says they can tell the difference is talking right out of their Johnson.

The fact of the matter is that between your needles, your mixer, your amp and your speakers, the quality of the recording is unlikely to be the weakest link in the chain.

If you're playing out, then most rigs are engineered for volume - not clarity.
