Upgrading my audio interface - Fast Track Pro

Post by slim » Thu Aug 21, 2008 9:21 pm

So i've been using an m-audio audiophile usb for a while, and despite driver issues it's served me fairly well.

However, i want to start using some external effects such as guitar pedals, in real time, which will require an interface with multiple outputs, at most i will probably only need to be able to send to two effects and have those signals routed back into the pc.

Has anybody used the M-audio fastrack pro? I like the look of it because it seems to have all the outputs i need, and plus it has mic preamps and DI settings, allowing you to record through a mic or from a guitar/bass which is something i would like to get into a bit more.

What's people's thoughts, cos i have been disappointed by M-audio before, would be nice to get a heads up before i buy anything

i've only heard good things about it, and it's really well priced for a 96/24 card, i was due to buy one, until they bought out the 'upgrade' Fast Track Ultra...

which i'm now planning to get.

ive got the Fast Track Pro
i like it, its quite small, bus powered so less cables n that

the front inputs are good because they are both jack and XLR combined
the headphone port at the front can change output signals from 1/2 to 3/4 by just pushing a button on the front
its got jack and phono outputs on the back
and jack inputs if you need them as well

the only problem ive had with it is that when my mac goes to sleep, when you wake it up you have to turn it off and on again, otherwise you dont get any sound out
abit annoying but not exactly the end of the world..

For the same price as fast track, I'd go with E-MU 0404 usb:

Doesn't look like it has enough outputs, which is the main reason for upgrading, recording is a nice bonus.

Anyhow, went with the m-audio cos i managed to find one for quite a good price.

Thanks for the help

I'd go with emu just because of the superior sound quality over m-audios. I've got myself emu 0404 pci interface as a temporary solution before I can get my hands on a RME fireface. I've used quite a few M-Audios in the past, and they all went to trash once i found out how much better emu sounded
