I wonderrrr where you got your first dubsteptune from? beatport? i don't think so..feasible_weasel wrote:![]()
with all these lovely digital sights, a wicked tune is but a nugget...
so no illegal downloading you Priks
I think you're right tho'.
BUT
if everyone would just blindly agree, it wouldn't be an interresting (read:fun) thread so..
i think it's ok to download some songs if you're gonna buy em eventually or if you're new to dubstep or sth like that
because the short clips you get from e-shops ain't long enough to dig the vibe of the song imo
also, a lot of dubstep artists are made by illegal downloads, especially when it comes to a genre new to mainstream, like dubstep..init?

When I was getting into dubstep I slsk'd a bunch of shit just to check it out. Followed that up with quite a few vinyl purchase. Many of which where ones that I had already downloaded for free. Honestly I don't think it is as big a problem as people make it out to be. I could be wrong but either way there ain't shit you can do about it.

if i want a track i pay for it. period. i don't need more than good mixes to find what tracks i want to buy. hence the importance of djs. i've never downloaded a dubstep mp3 except one or two to help sales from producers i know personally... and i don't own any mp3 equipment for djing, i play vinyl only... i never really have tracks that nobody has heard before, but i just think it's lame to be a dj without vinyl. i always have. i can admit that i tried it the last time i djed- i brought a cd with dubs, and although it was cool to play out a track i just made that day, it made me feel very small... anyone can do that.
some of my favorite producers have let me down by coming to shows with cds. it comes off as disrespectful to me. vinyl is classy. cut dubs... show you are into your craft. i don't care if cds are cheaper or easier to take on tour, you don't see metal bands going on tour with a cd of themselves playing so that they don't have to carry around a whole big ass drum kit, or guitar. they bring that shit with em, and put on a good ass show.
where the hell did i go with that?
ya i agree man, stealing is lame. i wish everyone thought the same as me about vinyl being cool, cuz then there would be no illegal downloading problem.

You've hit something here. You could say the system relies on up-and-coming producers handing their stuff out free, so that if and when they get heard and start getting played / signed, they reap the benefits because although music shouldn't be "free", it is something that you own and can distribute at your will.xTheWiddler wrote:i just give mine away free, it makes the whole proccess easier
However, being a successful artist and finally getting to that stage only to find people will download your music free can't be a great feeling, but being in this scene I suppose you have to accept that unless you write a hit crossover tune, it's unlikely most of your money will be made from your producing (only as unlikely as it is that you are a sick producer writing fantastic music though, it obviously depends).
I consider writing music (not just dubstep) a) cathartic, b) a sort of diary and c) something that makes me unique, and it will certainly make DJ sets unique to use your own music.
So my point is, if DJing is the way to make money in Dubstep (or many other forms of dance/electronic) and your tunes will get downloaded free via mixes or otherwise, then your tunes serve mainly the purpose of making you stand out vs. other DJs (which by the way is a fantastic argument for CD/Mp3 DJing). Depressing eh? Probably went miles off topic there but I just got up. Safe.
though when they tour they will most usually have an extremely cut down kit... unless they can pay somebody to carry their stuff for them... just like a dj!eshscramble wrote:you don't see metal bands going on tour with a cd of themselves playing so that they don't have to carry around a whole big ass drum kit, or guitar. they bring that shit with em, and put on a good ass show.
Well, in Bulgaria thins are a bit different than some of u might be thinking...i mean, we have almost no vinyl shops (i know about one, or two, they have about 100 records each, old misc stuff or house music) PLUS, in my country, monthly income is times lower than you might imagine - example: my dad is a surgeon for almost 26 years now. Monthly wage - around 300 UK Pounds. Not much, eh? Prices of any musical equipment over here - same as in Europe, sometimes more expensive (VAT, import taxes etc.) Not to mention that in Bulgaria credit cards run for 3 years now, and far not everyone has them. So, where do buy vinyl, or mp3s? no way... AND, we have no dubstep scene here, so we are forced, more or less, to use the WWW to keep up to date with what's on. Now, if I was a DJ, i'd definately play on vinyl, that's for sure, although it'd be killer expensive for the Bulgarian life standarts. But, I am not DJ, and plus, a set of turntables and a mixer is something I cannot afford soon. So I am slsk-ing stuff, but i pay for parties, no matter the fee, so in some way i am supporting the djs, and producers...

To get itunes files to mp3: You can burn it on a cd and then rip it.Junglist wrote:I already own the track but it's protected so I can only play on iTunes or iPod.

Yeah, I'd be suprised if many producers are relying on vinyl sales to pay the bills and are getting seriously screwed over on that front by downloading.JBlake wrote:However, being a successful artist and finally getting to that stage only to find people will download your music free can't be a great feeling, but being in this scene I suppose you have to accept that unless you write a hit crossover tune, it's unlikely most of your money will be made from your producing (only as unlikely as it is that you are a sick producer writing fantastic music though, it obviously depends).
On the other hand, I'd guess that a lot of dubstep labels are running pretty close to break-even. They're basically hoping that their stuff sells well enough to justify the expense of putting the next thing on wax, and if downloading hurts vinyl sales then it's going to be increasingly hard for them to keep doing so. And that's pretty obviously a bad thing for everyone.
Personally I'm fairly happy downloading rare / out of print stuff on the grounds that I'd rather support artists and labels by spending fifty quid on eight or so new releases than support ebay by spending it on a rare jungle 12".

of course it's not their whole setup. i definitely don't take my whole record collection to a gig if that's what you're saying... it would be irrelevant to bring items you won't use- i don't think a record bag is nearly as bad as even a single snare drumlilt wrote:though when they tour they will most usually have an extremely cut down kit... unless they can pay somebody to carry their stuff for them... just like a dj!eshscramble wrote:you don't see metal bands going on tour with a cd of themselves playing so that they don't have to carry around a whole big ass drum kit, or guitar. they bring that shit with em, and put on a good ass show.

yeah, its easy 4 mummy's boy/girl students and overpaid media types in the UK, North America and other super rich countries to get on their high-horses about downloads (not directed at anyone in particular, b4 u take offence...tho i suspect that IS who most dubstep fans are), but outside of this nice little fantasy world its often a choice between illegally downloading or continuing to listen 2 your older brother's late 90s ninjatune hand-me-downs.
tho, having said that, i'll completely ruin my argument by acknowledging that with the fucking huge number of legally downloadable DJ mixes and podcasts on the net there really isnt any need to go on limewire just to keep up with what's going on
anyway, rinsed subject. whatever
