I think a lot of it comes down to quality control as well. I download (illegally) music from labels to see what they are up to. It helps me map out what artists/labels I want to support by paying for them. For example, I may download (illegally) the newest Dub Police 12's and decide that it's not the direction that I want to support this music going into, and decide not to buy the vinyl or mp3 releases. Surely I am not supporting the artist by downloading their shit illegally, but I may find it's not an artist I WANT to support legally. I illegally download all I can get my hands on, so that I can hear it, and decide wether it's for me, and the people I expose this music to, wether it's something I wish to support with dollars or not.
Right now, to me, it's a matter of quality control. I may not want to buy the next wobblestep iteration (and sometimes I do) and illegal downloading helps me to refine what artists I truly want to support. I buy mostly vinyl, but I pay for mp3s too if it's an artist or label I feel needs to be supported in order to further their process. Otherwise fuck it. I make beats too. How am I going to spend money on buying shit just to confirm that it may or may not be what I want to hear/play out, when I too am struggling just to get my shit heard?
Being that dubstep is swelling so much as a fertile and and all-encompassing, multi-dimensional genre, I feel I have the right to steer it in the direction I am interested in seeing it go by buying, listening to, and playing out, the tracks I feel push things forward and amaze me.
I don't think it's wrong to download everything you can get your greedy lil' hands on. But I do feel it's doing a great disservice to music as a whole if you aren't willing to part with cash and support the artists and labels that you are inspired by.

Agreeing with Black Lotus and SpencerTron really. I think as musicians/music fans we disregard the efforts of software developers, without whom we would be royally fucked, but then get indignant when music is similarly stolen.
But it's essentially an unbreakable cycle, in that once your main musical competitors are using ripped Waves plugins and creating fucking delicious tracks as a result, you've kind of got to do the same otherwise your tracks will likely end up sounding "amateur" by comparison...I'd be impressed if anyone can manage a sustained output of interestingly produced tracks on a free DAW with free VSTs. (I'm probably gonna get shot down for that now...)
But anyway, the same cycle essentially applies to music downloads; in order to stay abreast of this rapidly evolving artform, you've got to be hearing new releases all the time and getting a feel for the direction of the music. If you're buying a handful of CDs/Vinyls a month (which is more or less what I could afford and still eat) then your illegal downloader friend who's getting 10 hours of music plus in the same amount of time will always be a step ahead of you.
Fortunately, my bro does all my illegal downloading for me

That sounds terrible brother. Come west. Your dad will make a TON of money.red one wrote:Well, in Bulgaria thins are a bit different than some of u might be thinking...i mean, we have almost no vinyl shops (i know about one, or two, they have about 100 records each, old misc stuff or house music) PLUS, in my country, monthly income is times lower than you might imagine - example: my dad is a surgeon for almost 26 years now. Monthly wage - around 300 UK Pounds. Not much, eh? Prices of any musical equipment over here - same as in Europe, sometimes more expensive (VAT, import taxes etc.) Not to mention that in Bulgaria credit cards run for 3 years now, and far not everyone has them. So, where do buy vinyl, or mp3s? no way... AND, we have no dubstep scene here, so we are forced, more or less, to use the WWW to keep up to date with what's on. Now, if I was a DJ, i'd definately play on vinyl, that's for sure, although it'd be killer expensive for the Bulgarian life standarts. But, I am not DJ, and plus, a set of turntables and a mixer is something I cannot afford soon. So I am slsk-ing stuff, but i pay for parties, no matter the fee, so in some way i am supporting the djs, and producers...
I have a friend, who actually really works in Hollywood proper, composing and orchestrating music for film. He does okay, but not amazing.
In 2001 he was making $11k a year in mechanicals. Last year, he made $340
mechanicals, in this case, are what he is payed every time someone either rents, or buys the movie that he has worked on.
This has really hurt him. He is in the business. he's made it, he's fucking good at what he does, and he worries about money. Stealing music affects everyone, not just those that make fuck all doing it, but the artists who base their livelihood on music.

well what about all the digital media outlets like digital-tunes and beatportJohnny Beat wrote:I'm with Red One on this, I live in Bulgaria too, and it's damn hard to lay hands on any music not on the main stream.
Gettin a CD (not-mainstream-music) costs about 1/4th of the minimal wage.
I started to dj dubstep with free downloads off this site and networking with other producers
location shouldn't be a factor / excuse if you have the internets
I give all my tracks away free, noone can really own a sound.and Im not signed, but i was happy to here that someone from russia has taken the time to rob aload of my tracks and craft an album for me and put it up for free download on a ripping site,

I wouldn't agree tbh
I've had a few releases uploaded to irc by those DC things and also tracks elsewhere, as an artist my want is for people to want to listen!! I couldn't really care if they bought my work off beatport or downloaded it illegaly, it's a hobby for me and something I love to do after my shitty 9-5, if it bothers the artist that much then nothing is stopping them from not making music, I'd rather a scene full of people making music solely because they love to do so rather than a lot of whiney bedroom so called "producers" whineing that they're not being paid. I think generally scenes that rely on DJ's are weak anyway, I think if a producer can do some of their stuff live and it's original then they have more of a right to earn some good cash from live performances rather than "spinning" then it's a testament to the artists skill and musical/technical ability rather than what samples he's downloaded...
Live gigs should be focused on more imo... that's where the money is these days.
Most peoples morals are all over the place anyway with sharing music, as in it's viewed that downloading from P2P is bad, naughty and down right dirty, whereas getting a copy of a cd from your friend seems to feel okay to most people, same principal. You could come up with counter arguements against that most people say "but my friend PAID for the CD" and I'd say "well someone somewhere on the internet who you've never met probably bought that track on P2P... doesn't sound any better really...
