The fact that they are going for the source material and not the animated film gives me a bit of hope. They simply could not better that film.

They wanted to remake Oldboy as well. Completely ignoring the fact that the original is a classic and only came out a couple of years ago. But thankfully it looks like its been canceled now. There was a bollywood version though called Zinda...

One other movie I could see coming around and pissing me off is a reunion type film of the Breakfast Club characters. That would be the worst.

Don't talk to me about bollywood remakes... I want to strangle someone everytime my mum comes home with a new film that's "amazng," and it turns out to be an old hollywood film... that SHE's seen before.

Wait, do they do Bollywood remakes? I know India churns out more movies than any other country (I think I read ~800 per year), and they all seem pretty much identical to me. They're all 3+ hour love stories that feature a lot of colorful costumes and musical numbers.

The majority of the mainstream films are like this yes, but there are a good few without the dancing and singing.
There's been a general shift from the younger film-makers to do more contravercial films in recent years too.
There's a good series by the film-maker Deepa Mehta, with the films
Fire, Water and Earth, and a lot of directors are starting to take notice of the "Generation X," Indians.

The reason why those lavish dancing/singing films are so popular is because they offer an escape. Now there's about 15% of India (Goa, Mumbai, New Dhelhi and Chandighar) that is like the UK - with roads and pavements and infrastructure, all the things we take for granted. The rest of the place is a fucking dump (i don't mince my words when i say that, i actually mean it,) So the movie going public want to escape their lives when they go - three hours of unrealistic lavish exuberance is their way to escape their grind.

You have to take into account the cultural climate of the country when I say this - because what you and I may find tame, a whole nation may find offensive - they had a ban on the film "Kama Sutra," because it was deemed inappropriate, and this was the country that spawned the original lifestyle guide.

EDIT: The singing/dancing is usually a metaphoric show of sex. Like i said, they find a lot of things offensive in India. If you watch some of the sing-songs, they're usually highly sexualised, and slightly graphic.

One film that got banned in the 60's was a film called "Bobby." Where a 20 year old guy and a 16 year old girl are infatuated with eachother.
The title song "Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein Band Ho," literally means "You and me locked in a room together," and the song suggests that they're straight fucking like bunnies.

Yeah, I guess that is a bit of an over-generalization.

As you can probably tell, I've seen only a scant handful of Indian films. Wouldn't mind giving a few others a chance, but I really hate musicals. Are they all musical?

I've seen a couple of Bollywood films late at night on Channel 4 and they've always been very entertaining. I don't see why everyone is so down on musicals in general. There is a lot of waft out there but there is also Little Shop Of Horrors, The Happiness of the Katakuris and Blues Brothers...

There are a few - but i dont watch enough to be able to tell you.

Like i said, Water, Fire and Earth are pretty decent. I can't remember there being any songs in Water.

A lot of the time, the musical bit is a show of sex. esp. if it's between a guy and a girl only. It usually involves her being in a white sari, and then it starts raining so her suit goes see-through. (and this IS acceptable... but kissing on screen isnt... It's a funny old country y'know.)

Of all of those, I'd say Big Trouble in Little China is the most ripe for remaking. And that would indeed be shitty.

The others are too recent/classic to be remade.

Going back to my original post, where I commented on the remade Friday the 13th: I finally saw the bootlegged trailer for this. Surprisingly, it looks kinda badass. But it's easy to make a movie look cool in the trailer. Gotta wait another 'til February to find out for sure.

The original Friday 13th Killer was Mrs. Vorhees, not Jason.

Yeah, I know. I was pretty confused about that myself for a minute. Apparently, the producers (one of whom is Michael Bay) are saying that it's less of a remake and more of a "re-imagining" of Friday's 1-4. Whatever that means.

In the trailer, they show Pamela Vorhees' head on that altar that Friday pt. 2's Jason kept it on, so apparently there's plenty of borrowing from the original series.

Seriously what's the point? If you don't understand the spanish, there are subtitles, if you don't like subtitles there are dubbed versions (which are horrible normally, but a lot cheaper to make than a whole new, identical film). Plus, it's being remade for an american audience, a country where 34 million people speak spanish as a first language anyway.

I can't understand the rationale behind that

that movie is/was so good.

i watched it with subtitles. i'll check out the english version once it comes out but the original is unfuckwithable.
