After all the hype i was a little dissapointed by the latest Batman. All seemed a little souless to me. Much prefer the old Tim Burton interpretation.
Talking of which i was very surprised at my self for enjoying Sweeney Todd, im really not a fan of musicals but twas most entertaining.

I'm in two minds as to whether I prefere the old films over Nolans new ones. I enjoyed them more at the time but I dont think they have aged well at all. The Dark Night has definately been overhyped though. Heath Ledger was good as Joker but it wasn't the greatest performance of all time. I think almost every film with that kind of hype and budget will let me down tbh..

And Sweeney Todd is amazing, although some of the songs are really soppy.

The last movie I watched was a documentary about 4 guys going to the national Scrabble championship. It was called 'Word Warriors' and was very good.

Have to agree with this. I loved the Two Face storyline (even though it essentially led to nothing) but, to be honest, I found the Joker just sort of... irritating. He never really struck me as being particularly dangerous or frightening. He just sort of showed up every now and then to mess things up. Ledger's performance was OK but I think it was a mistake for Nolan not to explore the Joker's backstory at all. Made it difficult for me to care about, or indeed be interested in, the character.

It was cool, Oldman and Ledger were good, and I wasn't persuaded before, but I'm now convinced of gyllenhaal's wickedness.

it was weird things in the film itself that kind of spoiled it for me. like after when Bats jumps out the window to save gyllenhaal, where does the joker go? 'oh, sorry to spoil the party, i'll just be off then' - it just kind of jumped to the next scene.

also - there's no way I can believe one torture scene (such as it was) is sufficient to make me believe that Dent has a dark side enough to turn into Two-Face.

some of the dialogue was pretty cheesy. i know it's a comicbook adaptation, but still, oldman's eulogy at the end was pretty cringeworthy.

biggest problem though for me was the fact that it never rained. the streets were clean, no one smoked, the cars are shiny, etc etc. when we see bats fight, he doesn't come out of the shadows and the smoke, he drops down from the ceiling and we see everything in close up and in good light. less alien, more adam west. it's a far cry from miller's dark knight or year one.

still, not to be overly harsh, i did enjoy it, it just wasn't as good as all the press/hype made me believe.

That bothered me too. The Joker had an entire room of people held hostage, with Harvey Dent hiding nearby. Seemed like there should have been follow-up scene there that had maybe been (unwisely) cut.

And don't get me started on Morgan Freeman's last minute magical mobile phone tracking device!

that's what i thought. the mobile phone tracking thing was silly - probably a chance for the studio to show off some swanky new computer graphic technique thingy (in place of a decent finale thereby saving a whole bunch of cash too).

can see your point there but i'm not sure of whether i would've preferred it that way. they went down that route for batman begins and basically that was the thing a lot of people complained about (myself included), that you never had a clue what the beejeesus was going on in the action scenes. i think we have to face it that we now live in an era where celluloid combat has evolved to a pont where the audience demands to see what is going on in clear view. i think a major influence for this came from the hong kong/chinese influence on western cinema, guys like yuen woo ping brought the straight up, no fucking about, 'at least 4 second of combat per shot' style and since then the studios haven't looked back.

you might be right. batman has been depicted in every way from supreme campness through to adults only darkness. personally, i don't think that the super slick style lends itself particularly well to Batman (not just the person but the concept). imo of course.
