a warning for serato/laptop djs

Post by claw » Wed Sep 03, 2008 5:02 am

feel its only rite to post up a thread with some advice for my fellow laptop based djs....I was playing a show this past weekend, and went to plug in my laptop (g4 powerbook) to serato, and to my surprise my computer glitched out and froze, then wouldnt restart....leaving me standing there staring down a crowd with nothing to play and pretty much screwed if it hadnt been for another djs laptop onhand and a trusty thumbdrive of my dubs i carry to all shows with me

but yea....heres the advice, get a proper laptop stand and save yourself this trouble

i had put my laptop on top of a dual-18" sub cabinet that was on the left of the decks up on stage since it was the closest flat surface for me to do so....it had never even occured to me whats inside of that speaker box, about 70lbs worth of really strong magnets....in short, my harddrive demagnetized and was ruined pretty much instantly....so save your harddrive, keep your laptop away from the bassbins and up on a real stand

:o

put yer laptop on a magnet and you are ruined. Without sounding obvious , This rule applies to alot of things, phones, tapes (audio/video) and even wallets because of cash card/credit card data getting wiped.

dang never thought of that! biggup you for having that thumbdrive ready, professionalism imo.

lukki moved his laptop off the rack and onto the stack cuz he didnt like the lappy in his face like that good thing it didnt happen to him, must be cuz he kept his on the edge.

that sucks man. I also try not to set my laptop on decks either, seeing as how all direct drives have a big ass magnet in them too.

To all DJs playing on laptops, either demand a table, or if your a nobody, bring a table :D

oh man, i am genuinely sorry. and honestly i think that might be a total loss, unless one of those hard drive recovery services has ways to recover data from a demag'd drive. electro-magnetism wins, usually..

did you have much on there besides tracks that was lost? :(

seriously, this is also why i back-up religiously. DVDs and external HD. you never know. i hope you get your stuff back, or that it wasn't a massive loss for you.

No, but when some asshole comes up to wheel your tune and it gets an 1/8" deep gash across the drop, well... CDJ's are better.

And in closing now that everyone has officially cried a little bit for Claw... Claw moves sound equipment from place to place for a living and produces tunes that rattle these magnets...

of all people to randomly set a laptop on a stack of subs... ;)

no cdjs still suck. that's just when some asshole gets an 1/8" deep gash on the face.
