i've not focused on live dubstep for a while now. I really enjoyed it, but it's a LOT of work. I'd have a gig in say, a month, and for a whole month, i'd stress about new material, and i'd work my ass off to prepare for it

It is really rewarding when even one person is dancing to your set though. I'd like to do it more - even though it's ridiculously time-consuming!

Im gonna download this and let you know what i think - i envy your reaktor abilities though! I barely ever go under the hood - something i'd like to do more of :D

doable if you're really good at thinking up interesting basslines or you can play live bass/synth.. i don't see how it'd be any different than playing any other kind of electronic music live. i've played a bunch of live idm type shows and it's difficult to keep it going sometimes if it is truly live.. but then that's the fun of it!

also, your approach reminds me of glitch mob's approach

ez

I do live-sets, using Ableton7, a bcr2000 controller for launching clips, volumes, adjustable LP-filters and HP-filters, solo'ing tracks and playing with send/returns (reverb, dubstation delay and Ableton's BeatRepeat), and choosing some VST's such as Massive (self-made basses), Battery (drumsamples and other hits/swells/reverses/kebangs and shabooms), the last three i play with an Evolution mk449c keyboard. The final output is routed through a Kaosspad3 (basses/fx & filters and looprepeat and other fucked-up-edits. I like.

The only downfall: reverse-engineering your own tracks is almost not possible, so i end up taking little loops from each track, fe: intro soft, intro hard, break, drop1, verse, chorus, break2, drop 2, outro,...
The controllers allow me to not look like i'm checking my email on stage, i wanna turn knobs, hit pads, hit keys, etc... I think it is somehow equally important to be able to 'visualise' your music. Being a statue on stage certainly won't help the audience to start to dance.

I recently bought an Akai mpd32 and i wanna use that one in combination with the BCR2000, and to try to achieve a more 'live' approach. I want to play my drums, record them on the spot and turn them instantly to loops to layer them with other hits,... Same for basses/samples/... but i think that's gonna take a while...

Goal: world domination.

our live show is myself using reaktor in stand alone mode with 2 seperate midi controllers and using qwerty keys to manipulate rythmns...and then my partner in crime on a single deck sratching (vocals and other bits over the top) with a bunch of footpeals for allsorts of shenanigans...this is especially good because he's a scratch teacher for a living so he's got 'bare skillz'

unfortunetly being stuck behind a laptop hides what your doing, it's less expressive but i find myself bashing my qwerty like an idiot...i suppose it enhances emotional intensity, or looks like i'm sending an angry email

anyways hopefully we'll have a video of the next show.

CLASSIC!

I'm planning on doing some live show in the next couple of months, just got to get my head around the way to do it properly without a lot of problems.

I talked to a moderately respectable Techno Live PA once who told me that his secret to being effective is to model his PA sets after DJ sets. People are there to hear music, if you can't give them that, play some records or your Ipod :D Seriously though. Focus on composition of your set. Is it completely improv or are you going to be playing relatively finished tunes?

Probably the latter, mixed up with little improvisations. Full Improvisation on set would be the shit, if I could do it, but I just can't :)

I just stumbled upon this 1 hour vid about live performances with Ableton Live. There should be something in for everybody.
Hey All,

The video of the Ableton workshop we did with Tom Cosm in London last month is now online. It's a one hour 539Mb WMV file that can be downloaded or streamed here:

http://www.pitchblack.co.nz/Default.asp ... bletonlive

Details of the workshop: http://www.ableton.com/pitchblack-tomcosm-workshop

For the first half-hour, Tom takes you through the basics of getting a track out of your Audio/Sequencer software-of-choice and setting it up for live gigging inside Ableton Live.

For the second half-hour, Paddy and Mike demonstrate their no-looking-at-the-computers hardware setup, dub mixing, and MIDI-triggered visuals.

It's a pretty comprehensive tour from basic to esoteric... with a few laughs thrown in...

Enjoy!

Mike, Paddy & Tom
EDIT: Watching it now - pretty interesting stuff!

I'd love to see someone get caught out with msn noises or something while playing live.

Ha, if i did a live set with a laptop i would probably get loads of email related samples and chuck them into my set just to fuck with people.

just remember to turn incoming bluetooth off on your laptop. people sending pictures of willys and cats and stuff to others in a venue can be off putting.

i did a short bit of testin of the newly customised patch in reaktor made for live use (although i didn't do a great deal of mangling), thought i'd post it here...all tracks by Pure Phase.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/klkoce

Pure Phase - Pure Phase vs That fucking dub tank!
Pure Phase - Napoleonic Complex
Pure Phase - tnuc Rocket
Pure Phase - Racal Zonal
Pure Phase - Man Power
Pure Phase - Lurker

...recorded live inside reaktor hence odd glitcheness here and there.

my first big gig (boom festival, 2006) my laptop somehow managed to pick up an unsecured wireless network, in the middle of fucking nowhere, and start updating my virus definitions while I had a 10000+ dancefloor rocking out. no external sounds and the computer didn't stutter but it has made me go WTF ever since it has happened.

true story.
