They're actually pretty compact. Could fit in the same bag you carry our serato box around in.

also the stereo speakers would cancel each other out somewhat, would they not?

just a thought

yes because the speaker on the left is negative and the speaker on the right is positive. because of this, a little known fact is that the tube between them in a tv, is suspended in air, because the canceling of magnetic force meeting in the middle creates a gravity well, and the tube just floats in space. they have to put a case around it just to keep it from floating into space.

claw wrote:feel its only rite to post up a thread with some advice for my fellow laptop based djs....I was playing a show this past weekend, and went to plug in my laptop (g4 powerbook) to serato, and to my surprise my computer glitched out and froze, then wouldnt restart....leaving me standing there staring down a crowd with nothing to play and pretty much screwed if it hadnt been for another djs laptop onhand and a trusty thumbdrive of my dubs i carry to all shows with me

but yea....heres the advice, get a proper laptop stand and save yourself this trouble

i had put my laptop on top of a dual-18" sub cabinet that was on the left of the decks up on stage since it was the closest flat surface for me to do so....it had never even occured to me whats inside of that speaker box, about 70lbs worth of really strong magnets....in short, my harddrive demagnetized and was ruined pretty much instantly....so save your harddrive, keep your laptop away from the bassbins and up on a real stand
Right,
I did the same thing at that show. My laptop wasn't on or something because mine made out ok. I was told thats where people put there laptops??? So I set up those stands above the decks anyways, sorry that happened man.
Good set last week, big Raspects,

im not gonna argue that this didnt happen or doesnt happen or whatever cuz it obviously did but lukki played his whole set with the laptop on there and that IS where they have been almost everytime before without problems, just saying its not some cpu death trap. there are also stools right there behind that stack on the stage that can and have been used before. i just dont want it to look like "ZOMG they dont provide a spot for laptops? they expect you to put them on the speakers?" ...something we will have to look into and be ready for in the future though for sure, maybe just be sure the stool is set-up and obviously ready to use for laptops.

nice one setting up the stands though for sure!

and yeah great night all around killer sets from everyone!

I don't think he was implying it was anyone's fault other than his. I wouldn't set my laptop on there. I'd probably warn someone else against it. Just odd it happened to someone who knows a bit about subs.

got final word from the tech today at apple, harddrive is toast...logic board is unharmed though, so that's a plus...he recommended a stand for future shows, said that extreme SPL and bass vibrations are no good for harddrives with as fast as they spin..and said to avoid magnets with my comp in the future

And press, I totally blame u dawg..u brokeded muh applz wit da shift system, hahah

I've started taking a lid from my dog-old Gemini belt drives I threw out years ago, I can usually hop the PB on the lid somewhere safe.

I managed to fry my Powerbook's IDE Bus by not using a surge protected plug at HOME just the once. Another word of advice, get an RCD/Surge Protect adaptor, I've seen so many play out without it's worth mentioning again. (anti-kudos to those who point out my own misfortune/stupidity)

suffice to say I have two PBs now, with regular Carbon Copy Cloner workouts :)

Claw any word on your friends' stand developments?

I managed to spill a bottle of beer in mine last saturday....

Crazy thing is... its still working, and I'm posting from it now.

Beer was literally pouring out of the expansion slots.

(And yes, I know its going to corrode and fuck out eventually, I'll be taking it to the insurer and getting it replaced anyway as soon as I can afford the excess)

on another note, if you can get those magnets out of a speaker they are apparently really good for shoplifting as they bust the security tags so they dont set alarms off,

i watched a training video at my old job, about shoplifters and their was this women "looking at sizes" on some cloths when in actual fact she was breaking all the tags, two minits later the whole rail of cloths was in her bag (bout 25 dresses) and she was out the door,

im not recomending this to anyone but just so you know.

Keep a CD loaded in the drive and ready to play if it fucks up. People don't mind that much if the music fucks up if it keeps going. What they don't want is to be left standing around like mugs.
