i think i'm pro-life

does that make me a heartless shit? i'd prefer if proper support & healthcare was given to women in terrible circumstances - rape victims for instance - to try and make the pregnancy & labor as bearable as possible. something about ending a life - despite its briefness - to provide emotional comfort to somebody else really doesn't sit right with me
The flaw for the Republican thinking for me has always been how much they are pro-life but not pro-social programming. Like....ok....you're pro-life...wouldn't that mean you were in favor of putting more money into the education system and keeping welfare for young mothers? That doesn't make sense to me. Like, protect life until born...and then, you're on your own--welcome to the real world, kid.

And then again....if you're pro-life, wouldn't you equally be in favor of real sex education in the school systems? That way you'd have less teens and less people having to make that decision. But its like pro-life, but lets not prepare people either in case they still want to have sex.

Like....if someone is pro-life, that's on them. But if you're pro-life, anti-social programming, anti-sex education, anti-after school programs and anti-welfare....well then you're actually pro-death, aren't you? So being forced to procreate while getting no assistance from the powers that forced you into being a parent...well thats just a trap, isn't it?
spot on. the principle is meaningless if the responsibility to provide support is shirked

PK .. I'm pro-life by CHOICE

You see what I did there?

if someone is pro-life, that's on them. But if you're pro-life, anti-social programming, anti-sex education, anti-after school programs and anti-welfare....well then you're actually pro-death, aren't you? Its the 'Christian' way to dumb down the population.. the more energy we need to spend on putting food on the table, the less time we can question authority and pursue an education. Only the real smart ones are smart enough to promote birth control to their own kids.. .. and if they arent smart enough to figure that out on their own.. fuck em.. toss em' to the wolves.. more machine fodder... and I'm saying this as a 30 year old father of two.

just for clarity, if you are pro-choice on abortion you should also be pro-choice on suicide, since we're talking about edgey subjects.

and what you'll find out there is a lot of contradictory and inconsistent view points. what this means, is the people spouting off whatever it is they believe do not really understand why they believe what they do and are probably just repeating things they have heard.

it's really unnerving when the majority actually doesn't want to think for themselves.

a lot of people's problem with capital punishment is not the killing part, but the inherently wack justice system that repeatedly kills innocent people, and has an obvious racial bias

y'know....i've been thinking about this one for awhile too. I know in our contemporary age, we're trained to focus greatly on individual wants and needs. That the individual is praised higher than community. Like....it seems easier to not think too much and just focus on the individual...but doesn't that put the onus of education on the individual to educate him/herself about the whole community? and everything they believe in? maybe thats a naive hope of mine....that people would take time out to make sure they believe what they believe and know why they do...

sometimes I feel all of 5 years old when it comes to politics... truth be told, i think a five year old would probably be better as president than any of the candidates we currently have.

and (ATTN NEOCONS) anti war. In particular, if you're anti stem-cell research you should be a flat out pacifist seeing as you've decided that 'taking a life' (still a very debatable point itself in that case) to save more lives isn't justified in medical research then taking lives in a very definite and indisputable sense sure as hell can't be justified in a war either.

Speaking of which, why does so much of the american population seem to think that a candidate who can't be left in a room with a mirror in case they start a war with their own reflection equates to a candidate who's going to be good for 'homeland security'? Do they think that people become terrorists because their home hasn't been bombed recently and they've got bored or something?

palin is whack as shit and doesnt give a shit about women --

Eight years ago, complaints about charging rape victims for medical exams in Wasilla prompted the Alaska Legislature to pass a bill -- signed into law by Knowles -- that banned the practice statewide.

"There was one town in Alaska that was charging victims for this, and that was Wasilla," [Former Governor Tony] Knowles said. [source -- http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/52266.html ]

The McCain campaign's surrogates have sucked up a lot of air time this past week shouting "Palin is a victim of sexism!" every time her credentials for the second highest office in the land are questioned. Yet so far they've managed to avoid hard questioning about Palin's role as mayor of Wasilla in overseeing policy that charged REAL victims, rape victims, for the expensive medical and forensic test necessary for prosecuting rapists.

A policy, mind you, that may have been illegal as well as heartless.

First, some background from 2000, when the Alaska State Legislature had just outlawed the practice of charging victims for the cost of processing the rape kits for their cases:

While the Alaska State Troopers and most municipal police agencies have covered the cost of exams, which cost between $300 to $1,200 apiece, the Wasilla police department does charge the victims of sexual assault for the tests.

Wasilla Police Chief Charlie Fannon does not agree with the new legislation, saying the law will require the city and communities to come up with more funds to cover the costs of the forensic exams.

"In the past we've charged the cost of exams to the victims insurance company when possible. I just don't want to see any more burden put on the taxpayer," Fannon said.

According to Fannon, the new law will cost the Wasilla Police Department approximately $5,000 to $14,000 a year to collect evidence for sexual assault cases.

Got that? Between $5,000 to $14,000 a year--less than Sarah Palin as governor billed the state of Alaska for sleeping in her own home[source -- http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/9/ ... /51/591837]. And yet, her hand-picked Police Chief says that investigating rape cases would be too much of a burden for taxpayers.

As the Frontiersman article indicates, the Alaskan Legislature eventually overruled Palin and Wasilla, making it illegal to charge victims for rape kits. But... was it illegal all along? Michelle Andrews of U.S. News & World Report mulls the question[source -- http://www.usnews.com/blogs/on-health-a ... stion.html ]:

In all too many instances, women are still being stuck with the bill for rape kits. This despite the fact that in order to qualify for federal grants under the Violence Against Women Act, states are supposed to pick up the entire tab.

If on her watch Sarah Palin allowed women to be charged for rape kits, she has some serious explaining to do.

She certainly does have some explaining to do. In a state with the highest sexual assault rate in the nation, nearly three times the national average, she allowed sexual assaulted victims the opportunity be victimized twice: once by their attacker and again by the cold concept of justice (or lack thereof) that Wasilla offered.

Also, it was Joe Biden who wrote the Violence Against Women Act:

"I consider the Violence Against Women Act the single most significant legislation that I've crafted during my 35-year tenure in the Senate. Indeed, the enactment of the Violence Against Women Act in 1994 was the beginning of a historic commitment to women and children victimized by domestic violence and sexual assault. Our nation has been rewarded for this commitment. Since the Act's passage in 1994, domestic violence has dropped by almost 50%, incidents of rape are down by 60%, and the number of women killed by an abusive husband or boyfriend is down by 22%. Today, more than half of all rape victims are stepping forward to report the crime. And since we passed the Act in 1994 over a million women have found justice in our courtrooms and obtained domestic violence protective orders." – Senator Joe Biden

Yeah... Palin is way pro-women! AWESOME! GET RAPED! YEAH! THAT 14K BECAUSE U GOT ATTACKED AND IT WAS YOUR FAULT! SUPER!

In 1994, John McCain voted against [source - http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/r ... vote=00295 ] legislation -- pushed through Congress by Joe Biden -- that helped put an end to the practice of charging rape victims for sexual assault exams.

McCain not only opposed Biden's legislation, but also has voted against federal funding as recently as October 2007. [source - http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/r ... vote=00372 ]

McCain's pizza or Obama's heuristics,
Kennedy's top-down welfare or Roosevelt's drag em up,
Carter or Ford's versions of stupidity.

We outsiders can't pin our hopes on any septic prez.
We can only rely on the innate decency of American citizens en masse
to press claims for equity upon their leaders.
e.g. without micro-analysing it, Bush's financing of AIDS intervention in Africa.

I must say i have become fascinated by the Fox news coverage. It all seems so unreal, they keep reminding the viewer about thier impartial viewpoint every 2 minutes. It's like watching a farce.
I am starting to hate Obama more and more each day, did him and Tony Blair go to the same acting school. As for Palin if i hear that Hockey Mum rubbish one more time i might commit a horrible crime.
McCain needs to shut up with the war hero rap, who gives a shit, you lost the war in a miserable fashion. Surely that ain't something to shout about.
Biden who??? that guy is too low profile.

I am enjoying it though, bloody hilarious. I wish British elections where as theatrical.

Oh and i wouldn't vote for any of them, Obama ain't the saviour of the world and McCain is just a war mongering old git.

this is the most fascinating and in some ways the most succinct coverage of the world view of the elections. been reading it every morning for a few months now. highly recommended for the open minded crew.
http://english.aljazeera.net/focus/uselections2008/

the most amazing part of it is the commentary sections at the end of the articles. a real reality check for american's that think that we as a country have a good reputation left anywhere on the planet right now.

If you aren't smart enough to have an internet connection by now, you don't really think you're smart enough to be selecting the person who might regulate it, do you?
