the best advice i can think of giving ya,

you need a duel core cpu(much faster when workin with music) go amd as they are in a price war with intel and you can pick your self up a nice £500 chip for £200- athlon 64 x2 4800.. this is only untill amd sells out as then they will cease production.

your motherboard doesnt need onboard anthing so dont buy one that has because you'll just be wasting money. ASUS have the best support and their motherboards are easy to set up as they come with an infomative manual. asus mvp-32 deluxe is quality for £100

go to ati and have a look see if they have any offers on their graphics cards or buy a 3rd party ati card like the x1900xtx-£300-£400 if you wanna make music vids or the 9800 £50-£100 pro if you just want something basic. the important thing is to make sure you buy the pci express version.

your sound card can be had for about another £100, try the m-audio web site and have a look what they've got. the audiophile is a v.good card for the money.

buy a sata2 300 gig hard drive a 200gig hard drive and an 80 gig hd. this way you can keep your widows installation and other important drivers on one without having any dodgy music software fuckin everything up. streaming software like big fuckin drums needs to have its own hard drive as it wont work properly installed along side other audio streaming software. you can pick some 7500rpm sata 2 drives from £60-300.

as your using a duel core cpu a graghics card a sound card and a few hard drives as well as all your usb peripherals youll want a decent psu(power supply). always buy quality- Enermax or tagan are the only established companies i would trust and there psu's are fuckin ace.
you can pick up an enermax liberty for £100 and it has a cool cable managment system that keeps your pc lookin tidy.

youll need plenty of ram say 2gig. i would recommend any matched pairs of pc3200 ddr. if youd like a little overclock on your system i would say buy some crucial ballistix tracer pc4000 ddr1.
next buy a case. buy a transparent one to show off your new hardware it'll make your studio look cool.

also this is based on socket 939 as am2 is too new to recommend. there will be loads of problems with the bios and you dont wanna end up being stuck without a pc that works properly waiting for the bios revision to be made. always go with technology that has been out a few months to be safe and always read at least one independant review.

I would love to start usin linux again, i abadoned using it just cause of the lack of audio software.

Intel Core 2 Duo is the processor to beat at the moment. Its making AMD's X2 dual core processors look really fucking stupid in the performance stakes (never mind G5's and macs in general, they look even sillier). Grab an E6600 which runs at 2.4GHz and you'll be able to run more plugins/softsynths than is sensible.

And they give off so little heat that theyre perfect for putting at the heart of a nice quiet music PC.

Core 2 Duo's shit on the X2s (and probably even the G5 quads too!

. I know cos i reviewed some PCs with core 2's in last week. And they're not expensive at all... AMD are having to cut the X2s prices substantially just to keep up.

the entry level core 2 duo processor the e6300 starts at about 130 quid, the 2.4ghx e6600 is about 240. For reference we found that the E6300 was only about 10/20 percent slower than an AMD X2 4600+.
