thanks for the link and the reminder that this JUST happened - all the Wall St. idiocy of the past few days has yanked the US media out of the South prematurely, AGAIN.

You don't realise how powerful nature is until you see pictures like these.

I am seriously glad I live in a place where the worst weather we have is 0 degree temperatures.

I still find it amazing that out of all that water a few buildings incredibly still manage to burn.

You might think the worst is over but clearing it all up is equally as dangerous. People could get sucked into drains or touch live power cables, hidden fires etc.

In a way I wish something like this happened in the UK (obviously not as serious as this) because there is ZERO community spirit left - especially in London and in that country its a time for people to come together and help each other out.

Thanks for posting.

remember the floods a couple of years ago though?

purley tescos underpass was like a lake and south croydon was flooded pretty bad...it was fun to have that for a change though obviously the hideous events that have befallen these poor souls aren't comparable

Don't show Parson, he would argue that the world is actually 2D and we are all bits of scrap paper like South Park characters.

while i agree with you in some regard, i think it's also interesting that the texas governor has nixed media fly-overs in the affected areas.

things are not going so well with FEMA relief efforts. this is beginning to hit the news (and rightfully so).

Thanks for that heads up, WTF.

Good point at the end of that article, too:

Authorities should realize that obstructing the media’s ability to report in disaster zones only makes the public more suspicious about the adequacy of their response.

it's very easy to forget how small we are, then mother nature kicks up a bit and reminds us.

i can't imagine what something like that would be like to go through...

what was weird about ike was that by the time it made its way up to the midwest (generally the gulf hurricanes seem to take a NE path, so we in the midwest get the remnants of the gulf coast storms), it had lost less steam than most storms by the time they get here.

sunday afternoon/evening, the midwest got slammed with torrential rain and wind, which left a lot of flooding and wind damage all over the midwest. i have never been in a full-on hurricane, but we all got a little dose of a weakened ike, and all i can say is, that has to be terrifying to take the full force. wow.

Edited to add: this is pretty fucked
