Should you DJ one style of music or can you get away with...

mixing styles?

do you buy records in the one style you want to DJ (e.g. hard and evil, garagey etc.) or do you buy from all styles?

problem is im on a limited budget and never know what to die - so should i focus on one style or carry on buying all styles just the tracks i like?

it becomes hard to make a set start of with quest and silkie and finish with scuba!

nah i dont think as a dj u shud restrict urself to just one genre.

i guess its better to focus on one genre with vinyls ur buying and what scene u following, but thats not to say u cant mix several genres. just gotta have a prefrence i suppose as it defines u.

but in terms of the artform, nah mix up as many genres as ur into to, switch it up and have some fun. dj'ing should be fun firstly.

yeah but with my limited budget its hard to get a consistent set... and i always end up buying tunes then falling out of love with them after a while - usually within the styles i don't buy as much of! i guess i just answered my own question.

If you have a limited budget you should buy the tunes you want to mix regulary, then if you get some extra $ maybe buy some other tunes and expereiment. i have a massive collection of tunes from many genres and I enjoy trying new mixes and mashing genres its super fun and rewwarding when you make some crazy shit that sounds good.

my favorite DJs are generally ones who can play a variety of styles all in one set, so i'd say yeah mix it up.

It's not that hard, actually. It helps of you use Ableton, which is pretty useful for edits to tunes, at which time you can bounce the edit and play on CDJ's, or you can use Serato, Ableton, Final Scratch, Torq, etc... digital is where it's heading, might as well get there now. You'll spend on some new gear initially probably, but you'll save a LOT of money and won't have as much trouble keeping up. That, and I get a majority from the producers here. I usually spend most of my money on things I already had for free.

And if you only spin one genre in a set, I'm most likely gonna walk out of the room. Blending various styles, tempos, keys, etc is what makes you a DJ. If you don't, you're a jukebox init.

i play everything, from ambient to hardcore/ gabba, not in one set, but different sets, even house is nice to mix. Alltronica. Never focus on style. Yes it is hard with the money, but u can get records u love and think to play/ sometimes listen/, not getting all that is new on the market in the records store.

Spend the money on a digital option now & it will pay for itself. I finally bit the bullet & bought Torq & it will save tons of money long term. I figure that vinyl cost me between $10 & $15 per plate, which would on average be 1 or maybe 2 tracks per record that I would play. For $15 I can get 5-10 digital tracks that I'll play.

I agree though, play what you like. I assume that you'll mainly play dubstep which means that you can branch out easily to breaks, 2 step, garage, techno, DnB, and house depending on the flavors that you buy.......

man when it works it works. def need the right crowd for it though. not sure i could get away with dropping a spor or evol intent tune at a dubstep night lol.

with now though it a s#@t load more affordable to buy more than one genre. thats how i got onto dubstep.

having said that i think im all out dub now heh. too many good tunes coming out man

yeah at the moment i buy dubstep, dub and DNB.

it's just i bought the silkie & Quest deep medi plates and they don't fit in my set anywhere so allthough they are great tunes they never get played in sets and thats half of the records i bought that month so a bit of a waste really!

lol i think its good to bring a mixture to build up a set. i suppose its easier to mix up similar tunes, but u can find tunes which will go in and connect u to different styles.

i think its good to bring a variety of sound. the best sets i find are the ones that build up to the harder stuff, makes it more impacting cos u follow the transformation. as appose to stomper after stomper.

this is why im loving dubstep man. i've spent the last 5 years playing tearout breaks and i kinda pigeonholed myself into the 4-6am slots, which was cool cause i could go as hard as i wanted so i was happy but with dubstep i'll play a few bangers then something chilled kinda like an interlude then bang back into awesomeness lol.

its so versitile and so easy to switch between vibes. f#@k i love dubstep lol
