Over the past couple decades Englishman Kevin Martin has tried on plenty of styles—the saxophone-spiked skronk-core of God, the industrial hip-hop of Techno Animal, the metallic, dubby rap-rock of Ice—but one thing they’ve all had in common has been speaker-destroying low end. Martin says he developed his aesthetic listening to the Pop Group and Adrian Sherwood in the late 80s, and those influences collide in his on-again, off-again project the Bug. He anchors the apocalyptically brutal electronic dancehall on this year’s London Zoo (Ninja Tune) with bass lines as heavy as construction equipment, and the MCs who rhyme over his beats tend to prefer a gruff, hectoring drill-sergeant tone—though Warrior Queen, his collaborator for this rare stateside gig, leavens her ferocity with constantly shifting, relatively melodic phrasing.—Peter Margasak
