Scholarly articles on dubstep?

I have to write a paper for my ethnomusicology class about a certain style of music from anywhere in the world. I feel like I could ramble on for ages about dubstep on a paper, but I need scholarly sources, Wikipedia won't do unfortunately.

Anybody know if any "scholarly" sources exist on the topic of my favorite style of music?

something by simon reynolds, perhaps. don't know if that's scholarly, strictly speaking

Kode9 has written quite a bit about music, underground culture in particular. Quite academic and VERY interesting. Most of the writing will be found under his real name, Steve Goodman.

His writing might also provide you with a good list of academic litterature, for further reading.

do you need the articles so that you can fulfil reference requirements your class has imposed, or for content? is it historical kind of stuff you're after or theory / analysis?

DJ Rupture and kid Kameleon have also written some interesting musings on Dubstep.

If you were to view Dubstep as a mutuation or continuation of electronic/bass music as a whole then there's quite a long list books on the subject. Obv though if you have to focus on 2003>2008 then printed material is a bit more limited.

there's loads of fairly scholarly stuff from the hypderdub archive, including stuff by Kodwo Eshun, Steve Goodman and Martin Clark. it's more surrounding dubstep's roots and early days than where it stands today but should be useful

energy flash predated "Dubstep" by a long way.

if it's refereed academic work specifically on dubstep that you're after then there isn't anything out yet that i know of. there are passing mentions in michael veal's book on dub and a nabeel zuberi article in science fiction studies, both 2007. reynolds never liked dubstep so you won't find much from him.

but if you just need non-wiki sources, then between blackdown blog, gutterbreakz blog, riddim.ca, fact magazine, my blog, lower end spasm, and a few others you'll find a lot of primary source material (i.e. interviews) and analysis.

nothing is better for sources than interviews you've conducted yourself with people within the scene, it will give you a real edge over the library crew. Send off some PMs on here with a question sheet to producers/label owners/promoters etc.
