People posting your tunes on youtube

Post by pure » Sat Oct 11, 2008 11:55 am

Whats your view on people just posting tunes on youtube? I just found some tune I made called crack house on youtube posted by some random guy. Is this good or bad?

My view after checking vid properlly - In this case I think its fine because he has said where you can get the release etc plus sound quality is not exactly amazing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB3FCCsVPfg . Its good for dubstep proberlly.

It's a tricky one imo, on one hand it's annoying to come across your stuff online like that, but at least it isn't someone hosting links to all your mp3s...

Plus, it's more exposure for you, and they wouldn't have put it up if they weren't feeling the beats... :)

I think if tune is _released_ it's not necessary a bad thing. Example Round The World Girls have 40,000+ hits.. It's a good exposure for artists & tune and if I remember right PRS pays roaylties from youtube nowdays.

Unreleased tunes not cool...

You can't use it for mixing because the sound quality is so low. Basically it's not much different from hearing the tune in a mix.

It can only be a good thing, exposure for the tune and gets people who maybe wouldn't normally listen to check it out. And it isn't good enough quality to rip and play out so no worry it will be leaked.

Only downside might be negative comments, but i doubt anyone really reads that much into them anyway.

I hardly doubt that artists are getting royalties from Youtube.

And I know there are loads of people out there who rather listen to music on youtube than buying it.

coupla links i found with quick search...

http://www.efluxmedia.com/news_YouTube_ ... 08169.html

http://www.list.co.uk/article/4567-yout ... r-artists/

And I know there are loads of people out there who rather listen to music on youtube than buying it.
But youtube can also atract new customers.. People who didn't know about artist before.

Don't think I somehow support illegal distribution or so. but in some cases especially for not _that_ established artists sources like youtube can be a good promotion network. And better one "illegal" source, than 100 smaller ones. easier to 'control'.

No.

Doesn't matter who it was. Just make sure you register your tunes.

only jokes ash, i got 2 tunes up on youtube an i didnt put em there either, is def ah good look for promotion, also today i stumbled upon a site or an extended site feature where they let yu download songs from youtube something called youtube mp3 or something like dat. basically it lets yu download the audio of any youtube vid an converts it to mp3, so if yu do got tunes up there jus make sure its shit quality so it can only be used as a reference to the artist or genre

Not sure how it works if you are an American musician.

But how PRS split youtube incomes between songwriters / producers I dont know. Didn't find any data about it.
