CDJ's are shit unnless u really love carrying around 2 tons of bulky equipment that cost 1000's of pounds.

Oh, and shit loads of CD's. which are shit quality compared to uncompressed wave's which weigh nothing.

First, who the fuck carries their CDJs around with them unless they are a pub / mobile disco type DJ? Second, CDs are 44.1k, 16 bit audio, good enough unless you're an idiot who burns 96k mp3s to cd. Most .wavs you buy on the net are only CD quality. They also DO weigh something because they have to be on a hard drive or something. Third, most clubs have CDJs now, so you just plug in your phones, slot in your first tune and away you go (unless some serato bod has unplugged them from the mixer by accident). Compare that to hurriedly fiddling around with laptop, dongle, and the back of the mixer before the previous DJs last tune comes to an end and getting it all wrong so it doesn't work. CDs are much better in clubs than serato. I use CDs and I take one rucksack which is about 20% full with headphones and a small wallet of CDs which has enough tunes in it for my purposes. For home / radio use serato is ok though, as long as there isn't any lag on it which will fuck up any scratching you might want to do.

Vinyl is for collecting and playing oldskool sets.

To be fair, Dubstep seems to be all about the vinyl and legal downloads... so vinyl decks and Serrato seem like a decent bet, unless you want to spend your whole life burning cds.

I'm tempted to go Ableton + Controller or something though... I'll just have to hide what I'm using from the trainspotters

I'm suprised so few people have said that vinyl is the way forward on a dubstep forum. I was under the assumption that vinyl is kind in dubstep, just as in drum&bass!

I think the point is that the laptop set-up costs half the price and can do alot more than play cds.

There is not one advantage in getting cdjs.
If you are mixing at home then by a laptop, its cheap and does bare other stuff.

If the club you are playing at only has cdjs fine, you can burn cds on ur laptop.
If they dont have cdjs, fine, you can plug in ur serato.

either way, spending money on cdjs urself makes u a complete mug. (unless u own a club)

I care how much they weight cos playing at mates house's who only have decks or at squats or whatever, on holiday and shit. I can't drive either.

ok, so for your particular situation CDJs aren't what you need. but how exactly does that translate to "CDJs = Suck"? a good DJ will know how to play on CDs, vinyl and digital. that's pretty much the long and short of it. I've not even been DJing that long and I can do a well enough job with just a laptop... I can't even hear the mix before I drop it in because I only have one sound card.

that said, the pioneer 1000s are really nice CDJs and I would purchase them when I get the chance. they can be mounted right about the 1200s with enough room for a laptop on the side.

I've managed to learn CDJs just while playing out.. I do have serato but managed to fuck the mini-usb input so you have to have cable half in-half out until any noise below 150 hz makes it come out!

plus one thing you cdj heads havent mentioned which i have seen people encountered in clubs/venues:

EVERY vinyl turntable works the same way.
put the needle on the record, adjust the pitch.

dont even try and say that the same with cdjs.
every cdj on the market is different to the next, theres no way they all work the same. different jog wheel sensitivities, different number of seconds skipped for each press on the skip button.

if you learn to play on cdjs at home, and get good enough to play in a club, there WILL be problems when you come to play out, simply becauser your electronics work differently to their electroncs.

I like the idea of the quality and some the new ones can do everything and more compared to vinyl but still i dunno . . .

i find maybe one in 15 clubs have something else - usually CDJ800s which are close enough anyway...

I only use vinyl for several reasons. First of all i like to see what is going on (following changes in the groves etc), and maybe more important, as said earlier: not two club CD's are the same, and I'm having a hard time figuring them all out too the point where I can mix as good on them as on decks.

As also pointed out earlier; a good DJ are able to play well on everything, but for the lesser experienced, like myself, vinyl is a safe choise.

Regarding the money isue, I love vinyl just enough to want to support the artist who chooses this medium. Furthermoore, if you get money from jobs, some of those ought to go to the artist, via vinyl purchases. Reasonable system?

I don't think CD's are the future, they are just some too-long lasting fashion thing.....
