and usually i fly Jet Blue within the states but im sure you can look for deals on kayak, priceline, expedia, etc if you're coming in from another country.
i'd start out by doing a little bit of legwork (espesh if you've never been to miami) and research books and the web: travel guides, wiki a miami map, etc.
now the tricksy part is where to stay .. last year a friend was nice enough to split their hotel room with me and we were right on Lincoln Road (pretty much the center of south beach), so all of the WMC events i wanted to go to were within walking distance or a short car ride. the farther away you are from miami/miami beach/south beach, the easier it is to get lost
miami is definitely a car-centric city, so if you're going to be a bit farther out, it helps to know someone w/ a car (or rent one!) if you're with pals its much cheaper to book rooms, but the trouble i always run into when im splitting a room more than 2-ways is who gets the room keys - which is a minor annoyance i suppose.speaking of booking rooms, fam needs to organize!
