lol :(

I know at least a couple shops in SF carry a decent amount, but I dont go there much and I dont know what the general style to them is

The shop I go to in the east bay (Oakland) has a dubstep section and there I've copped a good amount of proper material more in my sphere - 2562 Geiom Ramadanman Komonazmuk Likhan DQ1 TRG L.V. Shackleton, and of course, some good Skream and Kode9.

Its nice to have a shop that carries good dubstep

ohhhh!

whoops?

lol

I agree - the scene is big and healthy, lots of good djs, lots of talent, cool folks

might sound rude but im just sharing my feelings

I was talking about the styles and sounds I hear played out (whenever I go out).

I'm more of a meditative type, and the sounds I produce, and artists I listen to / spin (to my mom's enjoyment) are what I have come not to ever expect on an SF dance floor.

No disrespect to the abovementioned, obviously.

Also, the more London clubs I go to, the more I wish I could still go to Blueprint regularly.

Although I'm currently in a village outside Canterbury, which has slightly less dubstep related activity than interstellar space.

new zealand scene is growing every day. had cotti last weekend, tes la roc next week.. and almost weekly nights in the centres. music is still relatively hard to come by depending on your hometown, but the scene is definately on the rise. :)

I can't say much about Pittsburgh. There aren't many dj's / producers here and there isn't a ton of money to fly people in. I have thrown about 4 parties dedicated to dubstep and they were all moderately successful. People had a good time that is the important thing. I have residencies at two dnb nights and I will tell you they love it when I throw down. Not depressing but not hype either. All in all I can't complain.

afaik, there is no dubstep in my city (Charleston), or my state (WV) even. i'm getting my DJ gear next month and hoping to play out once i'm decent enough, but i'm certain i'll be taking road trips every time i do. i wouldn't even waste my time trying to start something here. =p

oakland record stores

Post by cbt » Wed Oct 22, 2008 6:43 am

Hey Earthling, what Oakland record store are you talking about? I'm getting seriously burnt on Amoeba, got to diversify.
As far as the scene here, it seems like it's seriously taken a huge step up in the last year or so, much more diverse crowd, way more people, and it seems like there's been more hype focused on locals rather then out-of-towners. Definitely a different vibe from a few years ago when all there was was the monthly dubstep edition of Phuturo at Underground SF. I'd have to agree that the wobble is big here, but there's plenty of people coming thru with different shit, DJG and Selector Dub U for starters. I feel way fortunate to be here right now, I definitely don't go out as much as I did before but there's shit going on almost on a weekly basis. Pretty cool.
Good thread!

stateside dubstep been blowin up... was gonna save this for a year end writeup, but fuck it. I'm too impatient.

Los Angeles, aka home base, has yet to experience a lull in bassweight activity. The only city other than London with bass so heavy i've actually gotten nauseous. Smog, Pure Filth, LA Dubstep Nostra (shit, will upload asap) & Dubstep on the Beach: http://flickr.com/photos/ajiri/collecti ... 981638515/
& http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.c ... Id=1735514

San Francisco
is nuts. ok? it just is, accept it. SF had family vibes down when most others where scrambling to find residents. that said, there just arent enough pics to do it justice, so here's a very few: http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.c ... Id=2157911

Denver Sub.Mission is just about the most organized party stateside (seriously, Mz2Phresh, youre amazing), with one of the most hospitable crews around and a scene just fucking BEGGING for dubstep :o . still workin on the remainder of those flix as well: http://flickr.com/photos/ajiri/collecti ... 974503977/

Miami Winter Music Conference needs no introductions, its just stupid, stupid good times with absolutely minimal sleep and lots and lots of rum: http://flickr.com/photos/ajiri/collecti ... 474103935/

Chicago
!! One of my absolute favorite cities in the world is also home to a wonderful family of the most humble and easygoing bassfreaks east of the mississippi: http://flickr.com/photos/ajiri/sets/72157605976782834/

New York
Dub War, so memorable that i consider relocating here every few months: http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.c ... Id=1645570
& http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v301/ ... DMZ_AGAIN/
& http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v301/ ... vs_Dubwar/

Also, Kansas City KABLAMMO! - pics from which i STILL havent uploaded (blame my external HD) - is straight bonkers. space suits, helmets, wigs, and weekly "Thriday" celebrations... all in a city that embraces music & appreciates beef as much as i do. best fucking prime rib ever, ever. ugh, so dope.

On next year's list (if i stay with my current job): Philly, Boston, Seattle, Portland, Austin, Houston, Phoenix (again!), Albuquerque and some repeats. If i dont stay at my job, then probably still half of those cities...

I've been so blessed to travel as much as i have this past year or so, and even more blessed to find like minded freaks -er- enthusiasts like myself to work with and ultimately meet. You lot are a rare gem, and this might be the gayest post I've written but so be it, you people have blown me away.

sincerely,

sara/hera

It's eye opening to see that there's such a scene all over. Even in little places there's people making the effort to push the sound out to people who want it - I think it'd be great to try and pioneer a night somewhere that doesn't get much dubstep - but still has the scope to take it onboard.

Mostly by me and my friends. i live in a small town(20,000 peeps who mostly listen to rock or country) so when we put on shows we have Dj's from dfrnt generes like DnB, breaks, house, minimal and of course dubstep. Its starting to get big.

But in the big cities like calgary and vancouver theres dubstep nights and the scene is blowing up. Alot of it has to do with the shambhala music festival that brought in skream the last few years(which was incredible).
Neat. Which city in BC?

feel it.

I love the folks out here in any case. i agree DJG is doing good stuff, not to mention Dub U, very refreshing ;). Yeh all around SF is a BIG scene, and someone like me has as good a chance here as any to put his sounds out there. no complaints in that department

Also, it's not like I'm going to every party, so I could be unlucky enough to have missed all the stuff I really would have liked lol

Record shop I was talking about is just the Berkeley Amoeba (just used Oakland to describe "east bay"), which you may already have scoured...

Hit me up on myspace if you want, as well :D
