Mountain Steppers' stronghold
Any other backpackers in here? I suppose worldwide they call it tramping, trekking, or bushwalking.
Good locations? Pros, cons? Gear?
Kick-ass pictures?
Discuss.

I go in for a bit of walking and scrambling, plus the odd bit of climbing and winter stuff. Not really backpacking, if only because there aren't many places in the UK where carrying your kit means you can go deeper into some massive wilderness, you're generally just deliberately avoiding going to the pub and staying on a cold wet hillside instead...macroclimate wrote:Any other backpackers in here? RAB! Or PHD when I can afford it...Gear?
Cloud inversion from the top of Ben Nevis:Kick-ass pictures?

Beinn Alligin, Torridon:

Some more stuff near Torridon, can't remember the names:

Am Basteir (The Executioner) on Skye. We went up the easy way round the other side, but abbed down this side:

Not very urban, is it? Most people I know who walk are more into folk and classical (which is fine by me) or cheesy metal and pop (which is less fine by me). I can't imagine many of the crowd at SubDub are getting up early the next morning to head out into the hills...Discuss.
Maybe I'm wrong, though.
Generally I think it does your soul good to occasionally come face to face with things that are a whole lot bigger and older and more dangerous than you, and decent mountains give you that in spades.

I <3 backpacking, but I've been out of the game for a minute.
In a past life I thru-hiked a fair bit of the Pacific Crest Trail (goes from the southern US border (California-Mexico) to the northern (Washington-Canada)).

Near Tinker Knob, north of Lake Tahoe (CA)

Burney Falls, a bit south of Mt. Shasta (CA)
I still manage to get out there every now and then. From earlier this autumn on the Olympic Peninsula (WA):

The monster-packs pictured there (my parents) aren't really representative of my style. I try to keep it a bit more minimal, although not to a fault...
Also I tend to rely on the beauty of the place itself to hold all of the aesthetic weight in my photographs, i.e. my photographic skills are garbage.
But I fully back this thread.

Nice pictures!
I know how it is about kayaks, tend to keep you in the water they do!
Got a few pictures uploaded:
Round Lake frozen over (May). Out near Darrington, Washington.

Me washing my feet off on the way back from Byrn Lake. North Cascades, Washington.

Lake Snoqualmie. Alpine Wilderness, Washington.

My pack at Robin Lake. Central Cascades, Washington.

Robin Lake as the sun was setting. Central Cascades, Washington.

I love backpacking...and in Pennsylvania there is tons of it. This is from the Quehanna trail up in Moshannon State park....desolate and gorgeous, we didn't see one person the whole time on the trail which was 27 miles long, though my brother, his dogs and me got lost the first night and added 7 miles to the trip. Also there is tons of elk living up there although I didn't see any. Notice the absolute shit pack I had. I went and threw it in the dumpster as soon as I got home. The pack was on me sideways by the end of the trip. It wouldn't stay on me straight no matter how hard I tried to fix it. Damn thing was SUPER uncomfortable, though now I got this pack....

which is 500% more comfortable but I haven't tried it out yet. I want ed to get out into the fall foliage, but I got money issues at the moment.
