Anyone been to or know Washington DC?

Post by shogun » Tue Oct 28, 2008 12:47 pm

Ez all,

I'm heading to Washington DC for a week next month for a works conference, a few of the days there will be on my own time so I can do a bit of sightseeing.

Can anyone recommend any good places to go, things to see/do and if they know of any good/cheap hotels!

Any info peeps have got would be a great help!!

Nice one!!

Hi I went there last year. Check out the white house and all that jazz and go to the smithsonian if you have time.

About a billion museums and whatnot, they are all within walking distance of the mall. I don't live there so I couldn't tell you what are the hip spots to check, although within the past few years, most of the good clubs have been shut down/paved over for the baseball stadium. Dupont circle has some chill spots and Georgetown has a large bar area. Modern on Wednesdays is the only dubstep outlet I know of on the regular, with Jaybird hosting.

and if you got time maybe take a trip to my town for my monthly.

i mean typical shit in DC would be all the dumb american stuff. the tall skinny thing. i forget what its called. where martin luther king jr did his speech. then theres the GIANT Lincoln statue to see. thats always fun. and capital shit and the white house, and then theres tons of really amazing museums. just do a google search for like dc area. and any hotel you stay at will have tons of info on all the shit to do there.
big up the donut crew!

I live in DC. Below are my suggestions:

Dirt: Wednesday night at Modern in Georgetown. It's a Dubstep party thrown by Jaybird.

LODA: Friday night in Silver Spring. Joe Nice is playing this week.

International Spy Museum: Research and apply to your own dealings.

Malcom X Park: One of the coolest parks in the city and rarely visited by tourists. It's also right up the way from the historic U Street corridor, which was once the city's Jazz mecca and still has some soul. There's also Thai, Sushi, Ethiopian, Jamacan food type spots.

National Gallery of Art: Has a graphiti exhibit that I think is still running.

The Hirshorn: Pretty sick video exhibit that I think is still running.

Have fun...
If that's what you're into...

yo

i used to live in NE DC and live in the 'burbs now.

Hotels -- are gonna be NOT cheap in DC... plenty in the burbs though and alot are off metro stops -- check the Crystal City, Pentagon City, Arlington, King Street, Rosslyn, etc areas in Virginia.

Club nights -- meh like Ben said most of our clubs are closed now. The scene here isnt what it used to be in the heydays of the 90s - early 00s. Theres Loda on Friday nights, they mix up all styles & genres (Headhunter played this past Fri and Joe Nice is playing on Halloween), Dirt on Weds over at Modern in Georgetown - there is also Beyond in Dupont Circle which plays a wide variety of music styles, dub, reggae, idm, downtempo, trip-hop, dubstep, jazzy dnb, lounge, deep deep house, etc.

as far as other stuff, tons of touristy shit to do... like others have mentioned, International Spy Museum is dope, the Native American museum is rather new and pretty awesome, The new Newseum just opened back up and is really state of the art.

two fucking sweet off the beaten path bars are as follows:
Jimmys Lonely Valentines Hearts - in the hood in NE but its FUCKING awesome... strong drinks, a vibe like youve never seen, slot machines that take Japanese Yen, etc.
The Wonderland Ball Room in NW is pretty dope, chill bar, good beer selection, etc.

Also -- check the Going Out Gurus in the Washington Post -- they highlight whats going on each week in DC from Thurs - Mon generally. Headhunter was their pick for this past Friday. http://blog.washingtonpost.com/goingoutgurus/

Also the Entertainment guide is pretty useful on the Washington Post as well - theres a link from the home page somewhere - http://www.washingtonpost.com/

If you wanna score some drunk blondie type college chick, def check the bars in Adams Morgan and Georgetown. I generally try to avoid these places cuz they get packed as fuck on the weekend.

Buzzlife.com used to be to go to page for any sort of EDM events going on... but its been offline for a few weeks now. Utopium.net has sorta taken its place but doesnt have nearly as much as traffic as buzzlife used to get.

Also, check http://www.dcdubstep.com - just popped up but if theres any dubstep going on while you're here they will be the first to put it up.

and Metro is your friend for getting around -- http://www.wmata.com

meh.. DC is alright.. I'd try to fit an afternoon in baltimore too.. its very close.. Dupont circle, Georgetown, and adams morgan are good place to cruise for booze, or some strange.. Not many clubs in the area anymore.. I have to say the ones that are around, are hardly special.. modern, loda and I bar are pretty cool spots, and are the ONLY places to hear anything remotely close to underground.. if you like the VIP bottle service scene, and top 40 hip pop, then your in the right place.... beware of the snobs

as far as cheap hotels... Priceline that bitch.. it's not uncommon to get a 5 star room between 40-90 bucks..

Nice one!!
Every museum in Washington DC is FREE TO THE PUBLIC. Take your camera with you, and not very much in the way of carrying baggage, because you will be searched HEAVILY upon entry, anywhere you go.

Again, the best stuff in DC is free. Tshirt vendors sell shirts 2 for 2 dollars, 10 for 5 dollars, stuff like that, but it's cheap crap. DC also looks like shit, and nothing like you see in the movies. There are fences between you and the white house, congress, everyting.... you won't see anyone worth a damn. Just stick to the Museums.

WARNING: NEXT WEEK WE WILL BE HOLDING ELECTIONS FOR PRESIDENT... YOU WILL BE SEARCHED MUCH MORE THOROUGHLY!!! Stay in the Federal building district, maybe check out China town... do NOT, REPEAT DOOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOT under any circumstances leave the general vicinity of the monuments, as DC is one of the most dangerous cities in this country. And the only people with guns are carrying them illegally, because they are banned. That doesn't mean there are no guns, just that they can't be traced whensomeone kills you.

Also, about 20 minutes from DC or so is Baltimore. Get ahold of Joe Nice, because he probably knows what is going on in Baltimore. You can catch an Unruly party. OR, you can get on a train or a bus to Philadelphia, about an hour or so away... not far, and there will be plenty to do there as well.

WTF are you talking about dood..

I live in NE, and I walk around this city all day long.. It's not dangerous like it was in the '90's.. There is also no more gun ban, so feel free to pack heat, when your not around the goverment stuff.

I do feel safer now that I can carry lead. I don't think you can take it into any museums in DC though. :P
