I like this line though, cos it conjures up an old school zulu warrior with literally a stick for fighting and also a modern grime guy with a stick (gun) whilst the whole piece of imagery is informed by the macho image of some guy running around waving an engorged penis around the place.

Loads of genre names are pretty sill though no? The sounds evolve loads but are stuck with labels from a while back, just look at the diversity under the garage moniker.

Marcus smashed it, one of best sets at FWD for ageeeeeeeeees.

The treble was definitely too high for him though, it was very shrill on African Warrior and others.

I love all his VIPs, they are a bit over the top but I guess he's just showing he's running things (which he is).

There are loads of specials in funky. Producers seem especially scared about tracks leaking so seem to be giving out specials of the tracks. At least there was no doubt about who was playing eh?

I guess it comes down to if it detracts from the music for you or not, and then if you like the music or not.

I personally thought it was an immense set. Really great to hear the weight pushing through on the pp system, not to mention the groove. Haven’t danced so much in plastic people for a very long time.

Also I need to mention: GUTTER MUSIC VIP!!!!

Blackdown and Dusk dropped this and it’s just insane: a bass wonk work out of operatic proportions. Such a big tune that I had to resist applauding it.

Ha. I think funky house / funky work fine to differentiate things, though I am still reading or hearing 'house and funky' and 'uk house' being used. Funky is a great name (though slightly miselading).

Only tunes I recognised in the set that I can name were Yellowtail (teased!), and what sounded like a Gabryelle remix special. Also, how about the second tune? (I think.) Proper minimal funky bash. Sick.

this was so huge. also pulse x refix, something with the rolex sweep meme in it.. erm another skepta refix consisting of just the 'doin it again' sample.. there was a lot going on there. the best bits were bits i can't even describe right now. DRUMS!

I love the vocals in both those tunes Blackdown. They're a bit too repeatitve for me without the extra melody sung over them. Yeah the lyrics are daft but I'd rather that than boring el standardo grime lyrics over it all.


Daft VIPS in funky are fun, like the music. The VIPS that really make me cringe are dubstep ones, some of them sound so narcissistic and even homoerotic that you just can't look the DJ in the eye.

yeah last night was sick, was genuinely impressed with marcus nast's set. admittedly was standing at the bar for the duration. cant really bring myself to be dancing to funky yet, still learning about it hah ha.

I thought all the namechecking VIPs were good fun, it's not like I'm there to apply the techniques of postmodern literary criticism to the lyrics or anything. I'd love to hear Marcus Nasty vs Chefal in a namecheck-off.

I guess it helps if you're already familiar with the original, though, gives it a bit of relevance...

I liked Skream's set a lot as well actually - seemed like a pretty good balance of deep bits to bangers. Although I'd been hitting the Foreign Extra quite a bit by then so my memory's a bit hazy...

But yeah Marcus Nasty's set gave me that thing where you can't quite pin down the structure of the beats - is it 4x4, soca or what? - but you're dancing like a loon anyway, which for me is pretty much the ultimate buzz.
