saying it's completely pointless without subs is just a diss to the producers.
if they only wanted sub, there'd be nothing to stop them building tunes like that.
as it is, there's some pretty tasty stuff going on upstairs in a lot of tunes, which is fortunate really.

but then the music is lead by the lows so subless dubstep is a little like playing folk music with no mid-range.
it's better than nothing, there is music playing, but the crux of the message is likely to be missing.

and i suppose it can be difficult to respect anyone's opinions about / reactions to dubstep who hasn't heard it on a proper, heavy, invasive rig.
you need to know how it feels. (who feels it knows it)

lo-fi is just economics tho innit.
first u get the money, then u get the venue, then u get the sound, then u get the power.
or learn to build, possibly cheaper if yr clever about it.

subs crucial indeed..

its almost a disservice to the producers by playing out sans subs.
faithful representation or go home, keep the genre exceptional and people will respond exceptionally.

Yeh there is good bass on some headphones but that's just the tip of the iceberg for dubstep, I think I could respect the opinion of someone who has only heard of dubstep on a laptop or whatever, because deep down I know that when they do end up at a night with a sub rattling their bones they will wake up

and that's when they will have an opinion/reaction born of experience.

btw: no headphones i know of can make yr nostrils wobble.
let alone yr chest or hip bones.
ears only pick up so much.

One of my friend had to manage to play a small set with no Sub at a Halloween party. I was very excited that I would be able to get some of my friends to finally see what Dubstep is.....

Was completely let down....

Playing Dubstep without subs sucks, especially if there is newcomers listening: then won't find anything special to Dubstep and won't look more into it.

playing with no subs does sound shit, most of the time, but if you dont have access to any, and have heard dubstep on a system, you can sort of still 'imagine the bass' and how it will feel, at least i do when i listen to it in the car o anywhere without a sub.

This is false. I spun as DJ Jack Pink on October 28th at a local bar. I played primarily dubstep in addition to the bellydance music that the dancers I was spinning for wanted. I live in a small Indiana town and no one in the bar had heard any dubstep before (I played primarily Stenchman, Vex'd, Distance, Ekaros, and Vaccine). I got many compliments after the show asking me what I played and where it was from. Plenty of people found this special and interesting and all I had to use was a Behringer KX1200 P.A. and a set of M-Audio MX5a's.

Yes, a sub is preferred, but people can see the merit in this genre without it, even newcomers.

Some of my favorites are playing on tables 3 feet off the ground, bad monitor situations, and not being able to see the f'ing mixer.

No but that did suck too, I forgot about that place. They actually had a decent monitor but the 1 PA placed randomly 15 feet above the dance floor was a real head scratcher. The place I'm talking about is in Bmore but I'll leave it nameless. I'm sure you can guess. The worst setup in D.C. was at Avenue. They had a Rane mixer that must have been made in the 70's. There were no EQs and the gain was basically a knob with 5 different spots that you could click into. low, medium-low, medium, medium-high, & high. WEAK! They also had their montiors setup for Yao-Ming. It blew my mind that such a nice spot that does so much business has no regard for what their DJs are using.

I really want to get down to Georgetown to get with y'all at Dirt soon.
Kyril said you guys are doing it right down there. I need to get my wacky employment situation under control and then I'll get at you.

If its a lounge kinda place , or an after hrs kinda vibe ,where people come to relax and chat w/ friends over some drinks...then not having subs isn't a big deal...now if its a club or a massive party ..then sure, you need to have subs and a decent system to play on.....just my 2cents!

I have to agree with this. Yes, a large portion of dubstep relies on sub-bass, but that shouldn't be the make-or-break selling point of the genre. It's about the vibe too, what feelings the music evokes. Choose tracks that are interesting for reasons other than being bass-driven if you haven't got a sub handy - it just seems like common DJing sense.
