Leave scratching to hip-hop and only doing it live if you can really do it. Its not impressive at all going 'wiki wiki wiki' now and then.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

i'm surprised by some of the views on this. i can't see how a turntable (being used as an instrument for generating sound) can be written off outright as bad in a dubstep tune.

Not all scratch DJ's are wanking all over (scratching over) the tune all the time, it can be and should be consice and planned...as far as pure phase work performance wise, it's a rehearsed and planned thing within the song structure, done via specially cut vinyl we have made (and are due to have made some more) for scratchin and dropping over our own tunes at certain points in song or structure or beat with specific sounds (vocal/effects...synths/pads/etc)...we rehearse this very regularly.

i also write some dubstep tunes with the intention of having room for scratch work to go (this is purely for the live patch at the moment).

bottom line, if it's done well, it will work, same applies to any instrument of choice.

Lazy Flares and Orbits work - and with effects work really well

chirps, cuts and stabs have to be really tight and abstract to sound ok

fact of the matter is , scratching is very difficult and 140bpm is a tricky speed to scratch over
you either have to double time the scratch, which sounds awful when constant imo, or do some clinical half time flares which are not forgiving if you mess them up.

this.

TIME is killing it with his latest mix :8: Obviously it has to be done over the right tunes, hiphop/grime influenced and harder edged stuff suits it better than deeper tunes but as ever its all about selection.

Keep pushin the boundaries I say, Dubstep is the all encompasing club music the world needs and already its broad enough to find stuff you like and inevitably stuff you dont. With so many international influences converging at around the same tempo not everyones take will be to everyones taste, less of the hating I say and just support stuff you like.

Thank u!! And big up Time as well!

DJs such as Rossi B, Luca, Skratch, 6Blocc and yours truly have been doing it since dubstep came out, just like we did over dnb and hip hop. When its done right, the crowd always gets hyped. And who's to say that hip hop doesn't have its influence over dubstep? And who's to say that dubstep doesn't now have an influence over hip hop? Funny how that works :D Bless anyone who wants to push their creativity in new directions. :N:

140 BPM is a challenging tempo for cutting. I don't cut as much as I used to some years ago but I can imagine it would sound great with sharp sounding scratches. Q-Bert would probably not sound too great as his style is very aggressive (but still great in its own right) but not exactly suitable for Dubstep. I guess D-Styles or Toadstyle could kill it over some Dubstep beats.
Juggling Dubstep beats is also something I would like to hear. I'm not a hardcore turntablist follower anymore as I used to be but I still check for some stuff.
I'm also with Lexxus that Hip Hop has an influence on Dubstep and vice versa. Some of Matty G's album sounds more like droning Hip Hop.

I think a moderate amount of decent scratching, for a short amount of time in say, two parts of an hour long set would sound good.
It'd have to be fast tho, half time would more than likely sound rubbish.
whether or not it would sound good would also depend on what sort of dubstep tune you were scratching over. it wouldnt suit minimal style, but would sound sick over some heavy, grimey dubstep drop
