Winston Churchill's Bunker (Museum) is absolutely sweet. After the war its like they just shut the doors and preserved it. Go there if you have some time and it is of interest to you.

Food:

Diwana Very interesting cheap and tasty southern Indian food, a world away from the curries of the north that form the basic staple of the average British curry house. Excellent lunch buffet, canteen-style, cheap. In Drummond Street, NW1 a block north of Euston station in a street dominated by South Indian culture, and amazing asian sweet shops - recommended.

Ecco No nonsense pizza, salad, panini, coffee house on Goodge St, Pizzas are £3, and are freshly made before your eyes. Very relaxed - top quality for the price!! short walk from oxford st..

oh and bring a rain coat.

For an ever changing legal wall, go see southbank, right next to waterloo station. if you go on the saturday there's usully loads of writers there

also, Portobello Road market in Ladbroke Grove for clothes, atmosphere and food!

suprised no one has mentioned camden yet. It has some nice shops and a great little market full of loads of stuff. It also has a juggling shop which i visit regularly

British Museum is great. and conveniently placed very near a wagamama.

Chain restaurants

Nothing intrinsically wrong with them, but probably not your number one priority when coming to a city with some of the most diverse and interesting food in europe, if not the world...

I say Rasa N16 (it's similar to the one in the centre apparently, but about half the price) or somewhere like Mangal Ockabashi in Dalston.

And if you've not been to britain much, check out some proper old style pub vibes eg the George at Southwark, The Grapes at Limehouse, The Spaniards near Hampstead Heath, The Seven Stars on Chancery Lane, The Wenlock Arms in Hoxton, The Blackfriars at, er, Blackfriars, the Princess Louise at Holborn...

It's not like some bits of europe where there seems to be a basic level of competence in the local food and most places are good or great at it apart from a few obvious tourist traps that you can see coming a mile off. There's a lot of mediocre food at very excessive prices in London. OTOH there's also a massive range of different traditions of food (including yer greasy spoons and chippies and roast beef in that, let's not get exoticist) and most of them have got at least a few really awesome places if you know where to look.

I'm still scratching the surface, tbh. But this Dissensus thread has a lot of good looking places.

I guess my point was more that we have them here... but I also don't like theme or chain restaurants in general.

Will be in London in one week... so excited... too much good stuff to do.
