chillout/ambient dubstep?

Post by ilynx » Thu Nov 06, 2008 5:15 pm

hello all,

i'm looking for some more chill styled dubstep. i've heard it played before at some outdoor events, but can't seem to find anything online, probably because i am calling it the wrong thing.

i'm looking for something with less of the growling basslines, but still heavy on the bass. the beats seem to be a bit toned down as well. and there seems to be a lot of the atmospheric and heavily reverbed effects on the rhythm bits as well.

the closest i've found so far is by someone called DFRNT Engine, a song called "Closing Credits", on beatport. although it does have a gated/arpeggiated lead synth line that i find kind of annoying, the rest of it is pretty close to what i am searching for.

anyone have any suggestions for artists and/or songs i could look into? what about compilations?

thanks in advance,
ilynx

Scuba - Beta

The label Deep Medi Music has a lot of chill out music.

Digital Myztikz have both hard and really soft tunes. Thief in the night is awesome.

King Soly - Tamil Dub

Kromestar - Budwise

(They are just examples)

hey man - The DFRNT Engine was my debut EP - I've done more since, with less harsh elements in.

You can find everything I've done on http://dfrnt.alex-c.com

And I run 'Echodub' which is a label with a whole host of artists all working at the chilled, deeper end of dubstep - so I'd say that might be a good place to start.

http://www.echodub.co.uk

We've got a diverse selection of artists, from techo-dub influenced stuff, to really deep synth led stuff and all manner of things really.

A free EP on the way fairly soon too.

Then I'd say look at stuff on...

Formant recordings
Mindset recordings
F4T Recordings

if you need any more info - feel free to fire me a PM, I'd happily point you int he right direction.

both the terms 'chillout' and 'ambient' make me think of generally not-so-awesome, noodly IDM.

BUT

there's alot of really great dubstep that isn't growly and evil. Skull Disco, 2nd Drop, Formant, etc all have releases that showcase the emotional breath and depth of our 'lil genre.

a lot of material on our label Clandestine Cultivations has "ambient" qualities although i would resent "chillout" accusations

I'm sure everyone will have different classifications for this but one of my favourite artists in this vein is Vaccine.

especially "Anaesthetic" on Hotflush ! beautiful atmospheric dubstep.

also, check this :Sub - "Skadi" (Vaccine Remix)

other recommendations ...

I reckon Scuba "Inmost" is pretty ambient
brillant either way.

Also - on Distance's album - "Delight" is a beauty.

Pinch - "Widescreen" on his Underwater Dancehall LP aswell :D

no offense meant, Alex. i was trying to say that when in the mood for more mellow stuff, i am not interested in hearing busy, gated lead lines, that's all. love your stuff tho! and thanks for the reply and info.
I like to think I'm at least smart enough to know how stupid I am.

terekete,
if you are, or are part of, sub swara, i think i have seen you live at one of the parties here in LA. i think it was one of the space island gigs, maybe? if so, then you might know exactly what i am looking for, because i heard it alot out on the playa this year. perhaps?

check kuma, geiom, quantum soul, peverelist, forensics, appleblim, faib and maybe some of cyrus' stuff, at least that's the most "chilled" stuff in my dubstep collection (and some of my favourite as well)...

Martyn
2562
Ital Tek
Skream - Hitch
some of LD's stuff
Pangea
Kito
Pinch

Off the top of my head, all of which I'd consider very good deep/atmospheric/ambient stuff, some of it is still quite dark though, but I can chill out to pretty much anything.
That's GAZ-EEN-EE-OH... For those that have never heard of most of the Brazil squad.
