Im not being homophobic or a bigot on this one. I agree that its wrong for the bill being passed after it was granted. Rights were stripped away. I feel sorry for the people affected honestly. I was simply saying that maybe it shouldnt had been an issue in the first place.Slim wrote:i do take issue with everyone jabbering on about "god given rights" when your country was founded by secularists, but fine.
And surface tension, while you are making a lot of sense, the whole "in this country anyway" thing with relation to "god" giving you rights smacks of nationalistic crusaderism, which is NOT a good look. Even if god were to exist, he/she/it is hardly going to recognise arbitrary borders drawn on his "creation" is he(/she/it)?.
You are only born with rights if the government where you were born says so
I straight up don't get homophobia, DJZ really, are gay people really causing any problem to you or anyone else? No? then shut the fuck up
Proposition 8 Passed?! You gotta be kidding me...

people have been protesting in front of the mormon church (a major contributor to the $70 million campaign) and all the fuck over hollywood for the last 2 days. unfortunately i live in the 'burbs and the only rallying you see is from the ban supporters. my neighborhood is riddled with yes on 8 signs, its disgusting.

i think it bears addressing that the reason for the protests of LDS are because they put so much money into lobbying for prop 8, and people are questioning their tax exempt status because of that. you cannot use a massive amount of 501c3 money for lobbying...big no no.hera wrote:^^.

You are very educated on this issue, I find the read interesting. Props.
Mormons actually were the original cause of marijuana becoming illegal. After polygamy was banned in Utah, some of the left for Mexico where they thought they would be happier, but they weren't and eventually came back and with them brought marijuana. Marijuana became a way to prosecute the polygamist mormons. The east coasts ban on the drug was largely based off what the people in the rockies said about it.

reason versus belief debates usually end up being like one person talking about shoes and the other person talking about weather patterns. pointless and barely related to each other.

Here's an interesting perspective from the LA Times:

And there's a video from the author's website on how whites - straight and gay - are using blacks as "scapegoats" for it not passing.

governments AND religious institutions (historically) have used dissension among the ranks as a way to divide and conquer those on the figurative "bottom".

It's quite sad really.I think a lot of it stems from the fact that, back during the civil rights movements of the 50s-70s,minorities did not have the option that gays had to closet themselves(ie: one can hide one's homosexuality, but not the colour of one's skin). Thus, many minorities tend to believe(as well as a lot of whites),that the "civil rights movement" ONLY applies to minorities, that it has nothing to do with gay rights simply because that is a majority "white" issue. It blows in more ways than one,but it was a huge factor in why blacks voted against it.

Actually, I've seen a lot of news round tables, where african americans will say "don't try and equate the struggle for racial equality with gay rights, it's insulting. It's not the same thing."
And then there are the exit polls showing Blacks voted 69% for a ban on gay marriage. Where the next closest group were less than 50% of whites, and about 50:50 Hispanic and Asian.
So it's not scapegoating when there is a 20% difference, and when in the next 10 years or so white people will be the minority in this country statistically. It's a pretty damn big deal and it shouldn't be ignored. However, I think that we all ignore the fact that the average african american is pretty socially conservative, at our peril
